Might be a silly question, but,,,

Why is this section of the forum called Hogan's Alley?

It's just something I am curious about is all.

While I am at it,,,
Why is the rifle called The Hide?

Had to be called something, and those names were probably better than Pink Fluffy Buttercup Land and Vote Liberal Democrats for a Better Tomorrow.

The story is that Hogan's Alley was a very "mean street" in NYC, or Chicago, or whereever. When police combat pistol ranges were first set up, with popout/popup targets depicting bad guys, someone called one "Hogan's Alley" and the name stuck for that kind of pistol range.

I am less sure on "The Hide", but I understand some of the old frontiersmen had an area near their homes or ranches where they could hide out if they heard of an Indian raid or an outlaw gang. They might lose their home, but they and their families would survive. (If someone has a better or more accurate explanation, I would not mind at all being corrected.)

Yes, I was familiar with the name Hogan's Alley and was fairly positive why they named the Handgun forum what they did.

As to the rifle forum, I always thought that Hide referred to a snipers, or hunters hide. Where one would lay in wait for game, or targets of opportunity.

Yes, Mr. Irwin they certainly are, they certainly are. :)

After all this time, I just never really thought about it.
Why does Hyundai call it an Elantra?

As Budweiser said during the 80s...why ask why?
Guess I really don't care...

Believe it or not, the auto industry has a master list of car names, and companies have to keep coming up with new names that are not already taken. Sometimes that is tough; Ford used Sierra, so Olds called one of their cars a Ciera. And there are goofs, notably the famous faux pas by Chevy; they called a car the Nova; sales were poor in Latin America until someone told them that in Spanish "no va" means "it doesn't go."

Well, the Nova thing is a great story, and it's told with such enthusiasm, but it's not true...

The Nova actually sold fairly well in Mexico. I wonder, if you put Pemex's Nova gasoline in a Chevy Nova, would the double negative actually make it a positive and make the car go like a bat out of hell?

But.....

Need I say we're off topic?

No?

Good.

I thought it refered to the original training facility at the FBI academy at Quantico. It's a early outdoor range, store front scenario style set up with various automated targets. Advanced for it's day.

as to the "Hide"

It has many names. Duckhunters call it a blind. A "Hide" is a concealed place to watch for and watch game. That's all. A high hide is a tree stand/elevated platform camouflaged, so the game doesn't see the people in it. They had one in one of the Jurrasic park movies. Thought it was a great idea (and would have been, if it hadn't been at mouth level for some dinosaurs!);)

The military/police snipers use the same thing sometimes, but I believe they call it something else.
