Mid/South Pennsylvania, Recommendations for Handgun Purchase

I usually do my shopping at Ace Sporting Goods in Washington, Pa when I'm handgun shopping, but it's been quite a while. I confess to buying my ammo from WallyWorld and yes it's the dreaded UMC gun destroyer stuff, but I digress. The wife wants to look at a good selection of new and used handguns, she's tempted. So the question is, are there any mid or southern Pa residents here who know of a suitable store, I'm looking for the widest selection possible, she wants to try 'em all !

I know it's a long shot, but any advice appreciated,

Regards,

Mike H

Mike H,

You might want to look at Powell Guns. It's located in Pittsburgh(Penn Hills). The phone number is (412)731-6211. They can give you direstions over the phone, and they will give price quotes over the phone.

I agree Powell's would be a good place to look. I recently purchased a Taurus Model 85. I called about 10 different stores in PA and they had the cheapest prices. They had them in stock and they will try to beat the prices of other dealers.

Might want to try Shyda's Gun Shop (and Clothing Barn) off Route 72 near the 322/72 intersection. Location is Lebanon, PA.

Large selection of new handguns, not so large selection of used handguns but good prices and friendly service.

Dan Pierce in Lewistown has a pretty good selection.

There's a shop in York that had an excellent selection about 10 years ago when I was there regularly. Don't remember the name, and can't remember if it is still in business.

Sheaffer's(?, used to have one in Carlisle, too, but it's gone) in Gettysburg had a good selection last time I was in, but again, a couple of years ago.

Forgot to add this...

Gault's Sporting Goods in Marysville doesn't carry too many new guns anymore, but their prices have always been very good.

You might want to give them a call to see what they could do for you on price.

Chances are he knows how to use it.

While we are on the subject of gun emporiums,
Does anyone know of a good one in the Clarion Pa area?

If you're in the Shrewsbury area (southern York County, just off I-83, you might want to try Freedom Armory (coming south on 83, right off the exit, right at the third light (you be on the Susquehanna Trail) and go north approximantely 3 miles. The store is in a small strip shoping center on your left)
Scott, the owner, always has a good selection of handguns and rifles. BTW, they're closed Mondays.

There's the "Walking Quail" just outside Shippensburg. It seems like they carry every currently manufactured handgun available.

Right up the road from you, try Laurel Distributors (Pennsylvania Police Supply) in Chalk Hill on Route 40 just west of Uniontown. They have an excellent selection of handguns. If you want their phone number, give me a holler.

Scott Morris at Freedom Armory is a good guy. Bought my first Bushmaster from him at a Harrisburg gun show.

Mike...
Sheaffer's in Gettysburg stopped selling handguns, etc a few months back. However, Reddings Hardware just up the street carries a few. Just up the road in Arendtsville, Taylor's Trading Post has a decent selection. Lots of handguns, new and used, and hundreds of rifles and shotguns. He carries just about a little of everything.

Sarge,

Well crap on Sheaffers!

I bought my Savage 99EG from their Carlisle store in 1984 or 1985 when I was going to school at Dickinson.

The manager there let me pay as little as $20 a month on it, as he knew that I was in school.

They closed several years later, and I was told that one of the other managers, a member of the Sheaffer family, was skimming money and putting it up his nose.

What was their reason for getting out of handguns?

Once again a big thanks guys.

Sarge, thanks for the heads up on Laurel dist. no need for the phone # as they are already on the list.

I'm really tempted to take a look at the Walking Quail but Shippensburg is a long ways east for us, pity. Happiness is being able to look at every handgun currently available, sigh.

Best

Shippensburg is EAST of you? Dang, Mike, I thought you said mid-central Pennsylvania!

You're in Western Pennsylvania, you Pittsburgher, you!

Mike,

Yes sorry, but we sure aren't Pittburghers, we're country folk like "yoons guys", right near the Fayette county border with WV.

I tried to cast the net as wide as possible. The wife has said that as Shippensburg has a mall as well as the best stocked gun shop in Pa, she'll suffer the drive out there as she can do some shopping, women, go figure.

Regards,

Mike H

Walking Quail in Shippensburg is a beautiful shop, but their prices are a little high. Shyda's Gun Shop and Clothing Barn however has most models of Sig, Glock, HK, Beretta, Taurus, Ruger,S&W, CZ but their used selection is real small (usually under 10 handguns).

I also like Shyda's better because the long guns are out in the open for you to handle. There is usually a roving salesperson who helps you if you need it, but you can walk up, pick up a $1500 Browning O/U and handle it without asking for it. All the guns are equipped with trigger locks for safety. Alot of area residents like being able to see and handle the long guns in this fashion.

Speaking of gun shops and malls, my favorite gunshop until January of 1999 was CJ's Gun Shop, in the Point Mall in Harrisburg.

A gun shop, in a MALL! An idea whose time has truly come, ladies and gentlemen. :)

Not much in stock, but great prices on everything. Ann would order anything for $30 over dealer cost and do FFL xfers for $20. It was worth the two hour drive from Kennett Square (or Philadelphia).

Sadly, they lost their lease in January of 1999. I still hope they'll go back into business someday. Until then, I generally patronize the Pennsylvania gun shows, Shyda's and Targetmaster -- although I may have to stop going to the latter two if they continue to stock S&W and demand adherence to the terms of the HUD settlement.
