Michigan knife laws are terrible

Spent most of my life in TN - we can carry a knife up to a 4 inch blade. I've even been patted down at a traffic stop and the cop saw my knife on my belt and could not care less about it.

Now I live in Michigan and the limit is a 3 inch blade, so my Gerber Gator must stay home

Oz, there is a lot more about Michigan than knife laws that are terrible.

But remember, this year "we're gonna be blown away"

You guys are not talking nice about Jenny, don't worry about a 3inch knife start worrying about all the new taxes she wants to pass. we're going to have to pay tax on getting our income tax filled.

"MCL 750.226 No. Michigan law specifies that a person, with intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, shall not go armed with a knife having a blade over 3 inches in length."

So there it is. In order to be prosecuted for having a long knife, they would have to show that you had intent to use it unlawfully against another.

This seems like a non-issue, if that's the only applicable law.

It sounds like it would then be legal to carry a 3 in knife and intend to do harm and it would be legal :p I'd still have my S&W tac on me even if there was that law (just have an extra 3" on me and ditch the 4 in. Most of my cuts would be slashes anyway so 3" would work fine)

As mentioned above it is legal by Michigan State law. However, many cities have their own laws restricting or forbidding certain kinds of knives. I believe Dearborn is one. I've never had a problem anywhere but if you bring unwanted attention to yourself I suppose it could be a problem.

TN has laws against "carrying, with intent to go armed, ... a blade longer than..."

I can remember a time, when I was in undergrad at UT, when I would walk around in traditional samurai attire with my katana on my hip (to and from class, not just to be a weirdo) ALL the TIME. I walked past cops and university security personnel, and nobody said anything about it.

By and large, cops won't bother you if you don't bother them. Good all-purpose rule of thumb for life in general: Don't be a jackass.

If you are carrying a rescue knife so that you can have a pocket knife for utility use, then nobody is going to care. If you're carrying a "tactical folder" so that you'll have a weapon in case the zombies attack and you run out of ammo, then the cops are going to hastle you over it. Just be cool, and don't cause problems, and you'll be fine.

I never thought about local laws and knife restriction. Just stay out of city bldgs..

However if you have the Gerber gator in the sheath on your belt. I don't see why it would be a problem. Now if you were to take it out to open that new CD at the mall you are gonna bring attention to yourself and possible problems.

Well opening that CD would make it a tool hehe.

And yes, I carried it in a belt sheath. I guess if it is more than 3 inches, it makes it very easy for them to give you a hard time. A belt sheath may make it look less like you have something to hide.

Ahhh...it is so nice living in Oregon. Not only do we have CCW, great gun buying laws, and hiking and wildlife...I also get to carry (as long as it is visible on my person) things like this...

a Pro-tech fully auto.:p

I carry various blades between 4 and 6 inchs around here for many years now, I do use it open CD or anything else I might need it for out in the open and nobody ever said anything. I can walk into court with it on my belt and nobody say's anything, city hall no problem. Maybe it's just contry life out here in SW Michigan that allows us to have more freedom with this kind of stuff.

I think the rest of you Michiganders have it better weather wise then us, almost 3' on the ground from lake effect that hasn't stopped in two weeks now and 12" coming today with 6" on the groud all ready. I'm not complaining, because this is the most snow we have had in years and finally old man winter is giving us the sled weather we have been waiting for.

Heck, I carry a 4in. M16 all the time, even on campus. There's no state law against it, the city law has an exception for knives carried as tools "in good faith", and, while there is a rule against them on campus, two of our campus police are carrying M16s because they saw, examined, and liked mine.

Nikon, I see you're in San Frann Arbor :P, do you mean that 2 U of M police actually carry ARs around town?

No, I'm actually in Ypsilanti, so it's two EMU police, and they're carrying CRKT M16 folders, a type of pocket knife. I carry the one on the bottom.

My profile says Ann Arbor because no one knows where Ypsilanti is, or even how to pronounce it.
