GF's 20yr old son lives in Alabama going to Miami (alone) for a Cruise.

Have heard last few years about how dangerous and criminal infested that area has become.

Would like some experienced advice about this, thanks in advance.

The Miami cruise port area IS in a nasty area, wife and I have gone out of there a few times, but prefer to go out of Ft. Lauderdale. Miami is close to main highways, but you need to go through a zone near the ports that isn't so nice. You can't bring a gun into the port (think like an airport), so you just make sure you don't need to stop until you get inside the parking area

Miami Vices, J-ville...

Thanks to Hollywood & media hype, Miami & south FL get a bad rap. Gun writer, sworn LEO & tactics expert Massad F Ayoob stated in a recent article that Jacksonville FL & Duval County have higher violent crime rates than Orlando, Tampa and/or Miami(Dade county).
I picked up a good friend at the Port of Miami after a trip about 2 years ago. The area was safe in the daytime and I did not see any real issues.
I had my loaded Ruger GPNY .38spl with me, ;). It was in a plastic secured gun case.

I grew up in Miami and lived there many years in various areas. The neighborhood west of Biscayne Blvd, in the area of the port , known as 'Over town' could be dangerous, particularly at night, but in daylight as well. If a person got lost and ended up in the midst of it at a traffic stop or whatever.

The park that is adjacent to the port on Biscayne is also a place I wouldn't want to be after dark or unarmed. Than again, I haven't been down there in twenty years or more but back in the '70s and '80s there were people killed or maimed down that way. It may be different nowadays.
