A distinction between good men and women and evil freeloaders and violent criminals.

Let's not follow the xenophobic reasoning and view immigrants (legal or illegal) as a source of problem. A rata$$ed ba$tard does not deserve the "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" as promised by the Constitution whether that rata$$ed ba$tard is citizen or immigrant. Citizen or immigrant, I want to be in the company of decent men and women. Hard working and civil people. I can tolerate the inconsiderate, the rude, and the silly. But I want out of my life those lazy freeloaders who are a drain on public resources with no redeeming value. I want out of my life those violent criminals who set out to endanger the people I love. Is that selfish? If so, is that bad? NO.

I want the lazy freeloaders to repent their ways and learn to work a productive life. Exile them if they refuse to try. Deport their A$$ instead of the so called illegal immigrants. I feel that term is just another artificially created crime. What provision in the Constitution makes it a Crime to cross a non-physical line drawn on a map?

Some post mentioned a goal: Remove the socialist agenda and the resulting magnat that attracts the lazy freeloaders. Let every responsible adult carry an arm of his or her choice and be proficient about it. (I must add one) Let every clear cut case of defense shooting and felony-in-progress stopping never cost the man or woman any time nor money. The violent criminals will know their behavior will bring swift justice and immediate reprisal. They will have to be Veeery careful. We should have procedures and laws that encourage their migrating out. IMHO

But, I have no viable plans, no herculean might or resource, and no powerful posse to help realize that goal. For now that goal is a fantasy to me.

Someone posted that they don't believe the removal of cheap agricultural workers will disrupt the price of produce and that they'd rather pay a higher price for produce picked by American citizen's hands. I take this argument to demonstrate the poster's distaste and disagreement with the produce argument. Well, I also doubt that stemming the flow of immigrant workers will cause the produce price to go so high as to malnurish me or my family. But that is not to say that lower produce price is all that immigrant workers are good for.

This point I must raise. Hypothetically, my next door neighbors may be illegal aliens. They fit the profile--they look mexican. They are also civil, cordial, hardworking and moral. They have a tight-knit family and supportive of each other. I've seen them be good samaritans and be helpful vulanteers. They make good money in their work. Now suppose they are living here without filling out some paperwork to satisfy the bureaucrats. Somehow these good neighbors have broken some laws and they are criminals? These good neighbors are exactly the kind of people I want as my neighbors. I aspire to be a good neighbor like they are. Why does my government want to deport them? Why would anyone want to deprive me of my good neighbors?

Deport not the hardworking, the civil, or the good samaritans. Exile the incorrigible lazy bums who have perfect health and youth yet choose to demand handouts. Exile the violent criminals who repeat their violent felonies if our state cannot execute or has too much red tape to execute these convicted violent criminals.

Finally here's my take on the mono/bilingual issue. An educated man (and woman) should speak fluently as many languages as possible. By 'educated' I mean well rounded, well learned, and well reasoned. I do not mean public education. I am saddened that my engineering students do not know the basic syntax of symbolic logic, that they do not know how to argue a point with logic, that they have little insight into mathematics as a language, and that they have little understanding of mathematical proofs as a debate. <rant OFF> I do not support a federal or a state mandate that public schools should teach English ONLY or to teach ESL. Bureaucratic mandates begets bureaucratic waste. I have seen my share of foreign students lost and confused in an English lecture and of foreign students left to rot in ESL classes Not learning the kind of English that teachers use in a classroom! Total immersion in English is the only way a student will learn English. Put more than a half dozen of non-English speakers in a classroom and we have only created a little private club who will stick to each other. If close to half of my class speaks Spanish only, then I as a non-Spanish-speaking teacher must find them additional reading materials in Spanish so they can study at home. And while they struggle to understand what I teach. I have zero patience for those students who openly disrespect their teachers. They must leave the class if I cannot get their parents to talk sense into them. This is my biggest contention with the public school system. A teacher cannot teach unwilling pupil. Too many kids consider school boring work and are just waiting to "get it over with." These are the people who should be doing hard labor if they choose to ditch school or purposefully disrupt school. Make them experience that learning is a priviledge to avoid hard labor.

I've rambled on long enough. Let the replies begin.

Can't say as I disagree.

Good neighbors are good neighbors - whether they speak Spanish, English - or even one of those Native American languages.

YY I agree 100% The stuff I was reading on the post I think you are referring to delt with a few groups and individuals who like to stir the pot. There is always going to be people of all races that fit the extremest mold ie the statment "we're going to take this country back" the comments about the lady with the chain-length wire fence on the border. We had an educated couple from England that wanted to re-locate to the states. It nearly took an act of congress and multiple letters to our congress to accomplish that one. I have employed at times up to 30 Mexicans through Temp labor companies to help my company meet work orders. On average they work harder and are motivated WHICH I CAN'T SAY ABOUT OUR LOCAL TEMPORARY WORK FORCE. In fact most of the locals are being forced to work (welfare to work program) and they appear to be going through the motions until they figure out how to manipulate the system so they don't have to. The language barrier is there but we manage to find ways around it. Many are not only working to feed their familys here, they are sending money home to support their relatives there. They are like any other group of people some good some bad, in our area the bad are being prosecuted. Though the cost and education barriers are a crisis in some areas of the country. It seems a shame that a few radical individuals or groups ruin the view of all. The spouting of the "we're taking over" attitude is nothing new. If you don't believe me take a good, long, hard look at the layers of Government below the "leaders" and see who's really beginning to take control. I am rambling. All I really want to say is,If a person wants to be here and wants to work for it let's keep them.

I say as long as they become an active, civil, contributing member of society, then I quote, "Send me your tired, weak, oppressed, hungry, etc..........longing to be free"

If they don't meet the above criteria, send'em back. I am tired of my tax dollars going into the endless pit of welfare and illegal immigrant support. Get a job and a green card or go the f**k home!

I live in Florida, consider myself quite open minded, but on a recent trip to Miami, I thought the cashier rang up something wrong and when i questioned her, her reply, "No hablo Ingles". I realize she may be actually applying for citizenship and therefore trying dilligently to hold a job. BUT, ("IMO") part of citizenship should be english. This is my opinion, your coming to America. Our language is English. I went through 3 years of Spanish in High School, they should give the same respect and learn our language.

There is room for everyone here who wants to contribute. I have no room for generation after generation of welfare loving couch potatoes who do nothing but sit on the couch and breed another generation of couch potatoes. The same goes for everyone. If Africa is so d**n good, GO BACK! If England was so d**n good, GO BACK! If Wherever your from is so d**n good, GO BACK! Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
(climbing down from my soapbox again)
Sorry fellas, this issue gets my goat more than gun control.

What I am about to say is going to be very unpopular, but it must be said. I live in South Texas and work in sports medicine, my wife is the managing obstetrics RN in a small town (Alice) 45 miles away. The town is primarily Hispanic and most of the girls having babies are teenagers. The typical profile of young girls admitting themselves to the hospital: age 19, having their 3rd child (usually by different fathers), on welfare etc. It is almost unheard of for any Hispanic in this town to have medical insurance; the vast majority are on welfare and get state-susidized health care.
I also teach a night class two days a week at the local college in introductory physics. The reality is that my class starts out with approximately 30 students, approximately half of them White, the other half Hispanic. By the end of the semester, it is an unusual event to see even one Hispanic left as most drop the course with a failing grade.
Are these the type of people we want more of in the United States? I have read ad nauseunm that hispanics are such a hard-working people but the reality is that the future does not belong to those willing to lay shingles in 100 degree heat, it belongs to those who are willing to think and create new ideas. This country needs software engineers, physicists, biotech professionals, mathemeticians, chemists etc. How many of you know a Hispanic who is a math whiz, an expert in chemistry, has an understanding of nuclear phenomenon? America has a tremendous shortage of these type of professionals and many mexicans coming into the country are taking precious resources away from us that should be used for training Americans in the sciences. The choice is clear: train Americans in the physical sciences and remain at the forefront of technological development and innovation; or, spend our resources handing out welfare checks and paying for 'studies' which try to figure out why Hispanics can not score as high as Whites in mathematics and the physical sciences.
Have we become so blind in our political correctness that we fail to see what is in front of our eyes?
Yes, many Hispanics make good friends, and many will work hard for a decent wage if given the chance. But do you want the Hispanics moving to your nice neighborhood, letting their lawns grow wildly, allowing their dogs to run around freely, causing your property value to take a nose-dive?
You may be surprised to hear that my best friend is a Hispanic from Nicaragua. I am always after him for living like a slob, letting his lawn grow, failing to keep his house clean etc. He works hard for a good wage, and when he gets his paycheck, he blows everything on TV's, cam-corders and all sorts of frivolities. A few days later, he EXPECTS me to lend him money (he thinks that because I am conservative with my money and always have a good stash of cash in the bank, that I have a duty to bail him out of self-induced financial crisis'). The worst part is that he is married and his wife has no problem with the way they live.
IS this really what you all want for America?
I'll be called a bigot, a narrow-minded hill-jack etc. But I call it like I see it and what I am saying publicly, is what most Americans are saying to themselves privately.
One final note, here in South TX, the mexican community is gearing up for a big celebration of Mexican Independence Day. This is shocking to me and very insulting. I am originally from Canada and I would NEVER even consider slapping America in the face by celebrating Canada Day. When you move to the USA, your allegiance and loyalty must be to the USA and ONLY the USA. Being an immigrant from Canada, I can say with authority, if you believe your country of origin is so wonderful, then PLEASE go back where you came from.

What you are saying is what you think most Americans are saying to themselves privately.

This is one American who isn't saying that at all. As a matter of fact I disagree with your elitist opinion completely.

I teach people of all races and ethnicities here in South Texas.

Some are excellent students, some are not.
Race and ethnicity is not the variable that distinguishes them.

I have worked with hard working honest Mexican-Americans and white who have been dishonest and cheat on the job.

This thread is bullpoop. This thread is starting to disgrace the supposed charter of this list.

Few if any immigrant cultures fail to celebrate their roots. That doesn't seem to be the problem. Having spent time in a number of countries I believe that almost all require language fluency for citizenship. I am against any official USA language except English. I do not expect immigrants to give up their native tongue, but if they intend to live here they should learn English, rather than expecting me to learn something else.
