metal targets

Anyone own some metal or reactive targets?

I'm thinking about ordering from this company.

They are expensive, but it looks like they are using really hard steel and the shaped targets I think are laser cut to reduce weakening the metal.

I'm half tempted to try and make my own, but I suspect they won't be as durable.

if you have a welder buddy maybe ask about some hand made ones from scrap steel plate.
I make my pistol targets useing scrap they last well to pistol loads.

For pistol, that might not be too bad. I'd like something that would stand up to rifle fire, up to .308 at least.

If you get 3/8" AR500 or 500 Brinnell steel (aka rifle steel or armor steel, but note the numbering), you should be able to do fine with standard .223 and .308 from 50 yards and back. If you use a milder steel, you will have real problems with deep cratering and penetration of the targets, effectively making them unsafe to use and ruining them.

AR500 or 500 Brinnell isn't your typical "scrap" that you can just pick up anywhere, however, so as to be able to make cheap targets.

Pick a nice design and get a local welder to make them. I have made my own for 35 yrs out of scrap. I like the top hinged models, they re-set themselves.

Check out www.MGMtargets.com, I have a couple that are for .22 rimfire only bought them when my daughter was younger and it made a trip to the range in a little more interesting than just punching holes in paper but he does make a wide variety of steel targets not just for .22 rimfire.
