Ok, so it might not really fit the profile of this forum but....I bought a Benjamin Marauder .25 cal. Fun to play with and cheap! Local varmints beware... :)

.22lr??????? darn airguns but at least nfa rules dont apply to them. if i was you i would put a silencer on it haha thats if it is pcp or air

Not .22, .25. It's fairly stout for an airgun. It seems on an airgun it's called a "shroud" and not a silencer. :) Or compensator, or some other such. I doubt the BATF has made a direct ruling on them, and the key there is to not force them to. Been there done that when I was involved in another company. Per them, when forced into making a ruling on an item they've never ruled on before, they will always error the side of caution. Anyway, different subject. :)

If the shroud is removable and can be shown to lower the noise signature of any firearm then the BATFE will consider it a suppressor. Be very careful suppressing air guns, especially if you own powder burners as well.

As I'm sure many are aware, when determining "silencer" status, the BATF has latitude so broad that they can pretty much determine anything as such.

The shroud on the Marauder is basically a sleeve that runs the entire length of the barrel and is threaded internally at each end. What goes on inside is currently unknown to me.

The key is to not force them into making a ruling on something below their radar, within reason. What I mean by that is if it looks like a silencer, and can reasonably be made to function like one, you might get in trouble for it.

If it doesn't, and can't, don't push the issue by demanding a ruling on it anyway. You probably won't like the answer.

Pics are easy. Google Benjamin Marauder. I don't have any yet.

You don't need to worry about silencing it (if it's really that loud?) because it's not a firearm. It doesn't use expanding gas from burning a substance to propel the bullet, aka not a firearm. I believe (email them) that the ones that burn propane or whatever it is, fall into the same area. Air rifles aren't controlled by the ATF, that's why you can buy automatic ones.

Either way, cool man. One of my brothers is looking at a hi-powered air rifle for Coyote hunting.

Air rifles might not be controlled by the BATF, but silencers are, and in that case it doesn't matter if it's installed on a Super Soaker. It's still a silencer. That's where their broad based authority to brand anything and everything they see fit as a silencer can get someone in trouble. As I said before, been there and done that and the end result went a long way to killing the company, which had NOTHING to do with firearms btw. :) Until you've been on the wrong end of one of their rulings you might be surprised at just how much latitude they have in making one, and how little sense in can actually make.

According to reports it's somewhere just north of 100db at the muzzle. Not loud at all by firearm standards, but it seems it's a concern with a lot of air rifle aficionados since they tend to be used within city limits or other places where using a regular firearm is against the law. Helps keep the piece with neighbors and what-not. Not a concern for me though.

If I would have crossed paths with this thread a few years ago, I wouldn't have given it the time of day. I don't know if it has something to do with getting older, more informed, or maybe I have shot centerfire and rimfire rifles and pistols so much in the past several years that I am looking for something new. At any rate, I'm jealous! I think if a few guys at our club would gain some interest, it would probably give me the little push that I need to go out and get one. I was also surprised at how much a really nice one costs.
