Meeting an Astronaut

Last Friday, 7 July, 2000, I had the pleasure of meeting, talking with and a photo op
with Astronaut Jeffery N. Williams. Astronaut Williams is one of seven Astronauts
of Flight STS-101 launched from KSC on May 19 and landed May 29.
Jeff is also one of the two people that performed a space walk during this flight to
the International Space Station. I was able to meet him because my team is involved
in testing some hardware and software that will be used later on the Space Station.
It was really cool to meet and talk with someone that had actually done a space
walk. WOW.

OK…….Brag mode OFF.

Cool, I remember when every kid in America wanted to be an astronaut. Sounds like a nice experience.

I can imagine what a kick that must have been.

We were at Edwards AFB when the Columbia landed (2nd launch). There was a whole bunch of us with RVs parked there watching her come in. First there was a sonic BOOM, then someone yelled "Here she comes!". We could make out a speck in the distance that rapidly became the Columbia, coasting in as graceful as a bird. Once her tires hit the runway, everybody broke out in cheers.

Boy, we were SO damn proud of America, everybody went over to some enterprising vendor and bought small American flags and lashed them to our side mirrors.

Flew them all the way home, bustin' with pride.

When I was in high school I received a NASA award from Mrs. Robert Goddard for a science project. My feet didn't touch ground for a week. I know how you feel.

I`ll never forget the time I spent in the GULF during the WAR, the first time our unit ( 82nd ABN 1/504th ) interacted tactically with a Navy S.E.A.L. unit...

WOW!

The BAD ASSES...

Meeting important people is cool stuff!

I can still remember the night, July 20, 1969, I was 5 years old and my Dad took me outside and pointed to the moon and said the astronaut Neil Armstrong was walking on the moon. I was smitten with the space program ever since! It was my distinct pleasure and a day I'll never forget when I got to meet with Neil Armstrong's partner, Buzz Aldrin (2nd man to walk on the moon and pilot of the lunar-module) on a So. California beach around 5 years ago.

In just eight days we will celebrate the 31st anniversary of this spectacular event! God bless the USA!

As a side note, whenever I run into an incompetent sales clerk/customer service agent who "claims" he/she can't perform some simple electronic or otherwise type of service for me, I just say, "We put a Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon 30 years ago and you tell me you can't do that?!"

In no way, shape or form, am I belittling our astronauts, but I had the good fortune and honor, in early 1970, to meet Audie Murphy at King's Gun Works, in Glendale, Kalif. We talked for over an hour about guns (he had a bunch), and about hunting, which he loved. He was a very sincere, soft spoken, pleasant gentleman. Ironically, he was killed not too long afterward in a private plane crash.

I also met Gen./Gov. (ret) Joe Foss at one of the NRA Conventions. Same impression as with Audie Murphy. I guess I'm old fashioned but those men impressed me more than any other "swell" I've met, and I've met more than a few.
