Medium-sized Frame 44Spec or 45LC?

I'm having a hard time finding a medium framed 44Spec or 45 LC. I was simply looking for a reasonable-sized 5-shooter. They all seem to be larger 6-shooters though. I'm NOT intersted in the Taurus lightweights. I'll tell you what it would look like.

1. 4-5 inch barrel
2. 5 shooter to reduce size
3. NOT for hunting, just a medium sized gun chambered for a larger cartridge. Used either for bragging rights or home defense.
4. About the same size as the Ruger GP-100 or S&W 65-66.
5. I would PREFER an unfluted cylinder... but I'll live either way.
6. I like the 45ACP, but WON'T deal with moon-clips
7. Don't really need the power OR the HEFT of a 44Mag. A .44 Spec will do just fine. A .45LC would be fine too (I doubt there is one).

Thanx guys,
Ben

Several years ago, Taurus made a mid-sized .44 Special revolver called the 431 (with fixed sights) or 441 (with adjustable sights). It was a steel-framed 5 shooter that came in 3", 4" and 6" barrel lengths.

It's no longer available. :(

S&W makes the 696 in .44 Special which would fit your requirements if fitted with a longer barrel. It comes as a 3-incher only.

This little thing claims to be a 44Mag. It's called a 629-5. It's kinda neat, but I don't think I'd buy it.

And the S&W 696 is quite a nice gun indeed. I have one and enjoy it a good deal. It will probably be tough to find a used one anywhere -- .44 Specials aren't that common in the used market, at least not in NC -- but if you can find one somewhere, snap it up.

Don't buy a new one. I love S&W revolvers, but the S&W company must die.

Matt VDW,

Thank you very much for the Taurus suggestion... I guess I'll be looking for a used Taurus 431. Any other mid-sized .44Spec revolvers? New or slightly used... it doesn't matter.

The old Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special came in a "target" model with adjustable sights and a 4" barrel, but are very difficult to find. Most of the Bulldog's came with 2" to 3" barrels.
I thought that Taurus' Trackers were supposed to be available in either Stainless Steel or Titanium models; in .41 magnum, .44 Special or .45 Colt. But when I looked on Taurus's web site I did't see any Stainless Tracker models at all.
If you look on the KTP website they have several of the older Taurus 431/441 models, address is http://www.ktpguns.com/

Found the "425SS4" Taurus Tracker model on their web price page: Stainless Steel .41 Magnum 5-shot with 4" barrel. You should be able to at least order one at a dealer.
