I was browsing a local gun store (online version:)) and I've noticed that they have a 6" model 17. It's been there a while. They have it listed for $375. I was wondering if this was high for this model. I've been wanting a .22 revolver for a while now, but that seems a bit high to me.

The Henry Bowman Special!:) Great gun. Price seems high to me. I paid $200 for my last one purchased here. Counteroffer???

Man, I've got to get out of S.C. ! I paid $300.00 for my last 17 (97%) and the last one that I saw was going for $400.00.

prescott, this last one was used. I bought it the same day it was brought into Schuizi's Guns.

I paid $325 for a NIB at a gunshow in Indy (it sits in the safe--"safe queen" I think we call it on TFL) and paid $375 for a stainless "617" at Kielser's in Jeffersonville when making a Creek trip one year (I think `98). YMMV.

Do you think that prices may be higher down there because of the One Gun a Month law? Just a thought. Great guns all the same.:D

I know it's been a little while, but I finally got to take a look at the model 17. For the most part I liked it. The only thing that turned me off on it was the trigger return (about 3/4 sec). I'm not sure if this is because it needs to be cleaned or if the trigger return spring is bad, or something else. For $375 I thought I'd pass for now. I may go back sometime and see if they are willing to drop the price.

Could the problem be something other than the spring or just dirt? The trigger does return, it just takes a while. I did look it over and while it wasn't extreamly clean, it didn't look too bad on the outside.

A good degreasing will most likely fix the problem.

BUT, you could use it to your advantage if the price is too high. Point out that you will have to have a smith fix the defective/unsafe trigger and offer them $200 - $250. Might work.

I've been poking around alot lately, internet and otherwise, and I've come to the conclusion that the days of a cheap 17 are over. Sure, there will always be deals of the "right place at the right time" variety, but I think that overall, $350.00 is becoming the low end for a 17 in excellent condition. If you see one for less, please let me know. That goes for 18s and 48s as well.

I'm just speaking in general terms about listed prices of 17s and not in particular about the one mentioned above. I certainly don't advocate what I've observerved, nor would I encourage anyone to pay full price for a damaged gun. Also, when I say "excellent" I mean 98%+.

It took me a couple of years of looking to find a Model 17, so I have to concur with prescott. $350.00 seems to be the entry level price for a nice one.

The exceptions are out there but getting fewer and further between. I mean, it ain't like Smith is cranking out new ones anymore. What's out there is it, except for the Heritage abomination of the K22.
Ugh!

Bought my m17 in 98 to 99 percent condition for 250, found an estate sale, had it about 2 years or so haven't seen one that cheap since.

It was sold

When I went back to make an offer on the 17, it had already been sold. :(

On the bright side, they did have two used 18's in the store. One was P&R and the other did not have the pinned barrel. The P&R was $325 and the newer one was $375. The P&R did have some holster wear though. Looks like it sat in a holster for a while, since there were two spots on the cylinder half way around and on the muzzle. That P&R one did happen to follow me home though. :D I buy my guns to shoot, so the bit of finish wear didn't bother me too much.

It is an 18-2 serial number K6387xx. IIRC, *&* dropped the barrel pins in the early eighties. Can someone look this serial number up for me.
