McDonalds Janitor Shoots Robbers: Must Read!

McDonald's Employee Shoots Robbers
Suspects In Pain, Call Paramedics

http://www.kprc.com/hou/news/stories/news-20000629-114707.html

HOUSTON, Updated 7:14 a.m. CDT June 29, 2000 -- Police continued their investigation Wednesday of a McDonald's maintenance worker who stopped four armed robbers by shooting two of them, while customers watched inside the northeast Houston restaurant.

The restaurant owner, Teroy Vance, told News2Houston that he was just leaving
around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he heard gunshots coming from inside his McDonald's at 5301 East Freeway.

As he was approaching the store, Vance said that one of the suspects ran past him.

According to investigators, a maintenance worker noticed that four gunmen carrying rifles and wearing masks were holding up a cashier at gunpoint. So the worker pulled out his own gun and shot two of the suspects, police said.

The four suspects ran away, but the two wounded didn't go far. According to police, the two were in so much pain that they ran into a nearby apartment complex and called for an ambulance.

Paramedics rushed them to the hospital. Hospital officials said that they are in
serious condition.

Vance said that he is glad his worker ignored company policy that forbids employees from carrying weapons. He also said that three months ago the same gunmen cleared out his registers. (bold mine).

[sarcasm] Yep, I'll look forward to seeing it on CBS Evening News myself - probably be their lead-in. [/sarcasm] (BTW, wonder if corporate HQ will insist the employee be fired for violating company policy?)

Great story. Thanks for posting it. Seems like these four guys thought they'd found a regular source of income. It's funny how these guys always go from being aggressive and hostile to cowardly scum after they're shot. Robert

Bang Bang, Bang Bang.......{gun at low ready with a curl of smoke wafting out of the barrel} "Would you like fries with that?" :D

My guess is that this employee will get fired. I'd sure like to get this man's name and give him the "thumbs up" message for his bravery and initiative to protect himself (and others).

I have some contacts in HPD so I'll see what else I can find out.

I think if a way to mail him could be found we should all send this guy and his boss a buck or two with the infamous GUN OWNER$ stamp across it as a show of support.

Sent the following to the NY Times:

Given the constant drumbeat in the Times about guns, I would
like you to read:

Please compare this to the recent NY Wendy's killings.

The Times never will answer the question of whether citizens have the right of armed self-defense, will you? Rather intellectually dishonest, in my opinion.

My "Letter to be edited" sent to the local paper. Please send similar letters to your papers. If only a few get through, we have been helped:

At 11 pm, Wednesday, June 29th, A Houston, TX area McDonalds was visited by four armed robbers, but the crime was foiled by a janitor who had his own handgun with him. He repelled the attack, wounding two of the assailants. No employees or customers were injured.

The real crime is that nobody at the recent New York Wendy's slaying had the same fighting chance. They cooperated, and they died for it. Disarming private citizens in an effort to curb crime makes no sense. No major coverage was provided for the Texas incident, but the New York incident was plastered all over the media. Only providing one side of the gun control story by "spiking" stories involving the heroic efforts of armed private citizens is poor journalism. Those wishing to catch a glimpse of the truth should read "More Guns, Less Crime" by John Lott.

One Suspect Still On Loose
HOUSTON, Updated 5:56 p.m. CDT June 29, 2000 -- Teroy Vance, owner of a McDonald's that was almost robbed Wednesday night, praised his employee for shooting two armed robbers. Thursday, Vance is faced with having to fire him.

Willis Lee, a janitor at the McDonald's at 5301 East Freeway, shot the suspects as they were holding up a cashier. It is against McDonald's policy for employees to carry weapons.

Vance said he was glad that Lee used his gun against the thieves.

Police identified two of the three suspects as Clarence Davis Winslow and Timothy Lee Martin. The third suspect is still on the loose.

Because of their gunshot wounds, Winslow and Martin ran to a nearby apartment complex and called for an ambulance. They are in fair condition at area hospitals.

Vance told News2Houston that he was just leaving around 11 p.m. when he heard gunshots coming from inside his McDonald's.

Vance and the other employees are calling Lee a hero.

* DISCUSSION: What Should McDonald's Do?

* SURVEY: Should Employee Be Fired?[/quote]

Went and voted in the poll -- respondents are overwhelmingly in favour of the man NOT being fired. (As they should be.)

I can't comment on the forum on the site, because I'm not registered, but while most of the comments are favourable, there are a couple of absolute doozies there!

As I posted in another thread, a Sydney real estate agent has just been fined $800 000 because one of his employees was held up at work by an armed thief. No shots fired, no-one hurt. The ruling was that he had failed to provide a safe working environment.

Perhaps all the employees (and customers) need to sue Macdonald's arse off on similar grounds, and see if they change their tune!!

Fire him: 6.1%
Keep him: 93%
Don't care: 0.9%

Liked the comment of one of the discussion respondents. Said the guy should be fired, since it was company policy, blah, blah. However, inasmuch as his actions at the very least saved the company money, and probably lives in the long run, they should give him a rather handsome severence package - say, $1M... :D
