McCain and Bradly dropped out!?

George Hill

Staff Alumnus
I heard rumor that they both dropped out.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Who is the leading Reform Party candidate?

George,

Both McCain and Bradley have news conferences around noon today to announce such. Bradley announced he will support Gore. McCain announced he will not support Bush but will also not run as an independant or in the reform party.

Chris..

McCain is suspending his campaign so as to keep the delegates he has won. That way, he will have influence over the party platform.

McC is holding a press conference today.... He is expected to announce his withdrawal. (ABC News)

This is a classic and often-used exercise in power.

McCain has something Bush badly needs. They both understand the rules.

McCain could simply roll over and give Bush what he wants, or he can negotiate it. What are they negotiating? McCains support, which would also influence the millions of supporters he has attracted. If he doesn't support Bush, those supporters disperse, and that would help Algore.

But Bush knows hardball equally as well. He may very well tell McCain no deal, and go out on his own to rebuild that independent base.

No one who plays for power gives it up without getting something back. That's rule number one. These rules go back to the beginning of tribes. No reason to think they would change now because we think we're "civilized". (That's what the gun banners think. We're civilized, so we don't need guns. Fact is we're only a few decades into the radical thought that power should change without the use of deadly force, out of how many millions as our species has evolved.)

Ok, if Bush agrees too quickly, he will be seen as weak, and admitting he can't build the independent coalition on his own. If McCain agrees too quickly, he is seen as betraying the trust of his supporters.

Expect this dance to continue for a while, until both can make a deal and save face.

By the way, McCain could be a devastating third party candidate, with a very good chance of winning (better than 30-40%). If he has no loyalty, that's the move he'll make.

I think it's a little harsh to think of the man as a coward. He may be a little mad, but cowardice is not a trait I would ascribe to him.

McCain is also fighting history and a strong set of personal demons. His grandfather and father were both Navy admirals, and warriors run in his lineage. He is clearly up to this fight with Bush. He also wants to be listed in his genealogy as an opponent worthy of respect.

We are watching, in my opinion, a power struggle among men born as warriors and anointed by history. This will be an all-time classic. This kind of stuff doesn't come along very often. Bush, Gore, and McCain come from generations of leaders and warriors. A true spectacle is unfolding!

The following story carries on this theme. Well worth the reading for fans of this kind of history!

Bush vs. Gore: final act in old play

If McCain were half the hero he wants the American people to think he is, he would drop out and throw his wholehearted support behind W. Keyes should do the same. If McCain cares at all about the GOP he would do this. If this was just an ego trip he will just go back to AZ, lick his wounds and do nothing. I heard that 35% of his supporters say they will not vote for W, that's scary. McCain can be a help to unite the GOP, that's the only way we will be able to finally evict the Klinton-Gore administration.

Keyes is the man who came closest to filling all my needs out of a president, but obviously I'm in the minority. W isn't my idea of the perfect president(I know, apologizing again), but he's way better than Algore will be. Like it or not you LPers, he's the only one who can beat Algore. I don't want to start into another insulting session with the LPers, you guys are very passionate about your beliefs and I respect that. I just can't make myself vote for a guy who won't hardly draw 5% and possibly be the cause of Algore running for re-election in 2004. The long and short of it is, it will either be W or Algore winning in November. Which do you want? There is no third or fourth choice.

W. doesn't need McCain's help to unite the GOP. He needs McCain's help to win, for without independents and democratic cross-overs, W. will loose, even with 100% of the GOP.

McCain has 200 or so delegates committed to him and he has won 7 states. According to GOP rules, he has the power to demand a roll-call vote on every item in the GOP platform at the convention. There is *nobody* that wants that to happen, except, of course, loyal Democrats.

W. is already linking his star somewhat to McCain's call for campaign finance reform, and I would be willing to bet cash money that we will see some committment out of the GOP on it during the campaign. (They'll loose some of the problem areas during the negotiation, but unlimited soft money is becoming an anachronism.) Jim Nicholson (the chair of the GOP) has just said as much in response to McCain's announcement of his campaign "suspension". Fact of the matter is, Gore is very weak here, perhaps weaker than W. Gore is already admitting he "made mistakes".

Hang on, it's going to be a wonderful ride. I just hope my blood pressure can handle it. (Shiners is good for blood pressure, isn't it?)

Let's not forget that many McCain "supporters" are registered Democrats voting for McCain in open primaries so as deny Dubya the delegates. These people had no intention of voting McCain if he had won the Republican nomination. They were just using him to hurt Bush.

Now the campaign will get interesting and very nasty.
The press and the democrats are completely underestimating Bush.
Ann Richards considered him a lightweight and out she went.
All Bush has to do is remain calm, stay on his message, and Algore will, eventually, start acting goofy.
If Bush picks a good running mate,(look for Colin Powells name to surface)and Gore picks a dingaling like Feinstine-it's Bush time.
As for McCain running as an independent, if that happens, he will screw up the election and give it to Al.
The minute he announces, as a third party candidate, we all better start stocking up on as much ammo and guns as we will ever want in a lifetime, because the end of the 2nd ammendment would be coming pronto!

Now that Senator McCain will be back in the Senate, it will be interesting indeed to see how he reacts to some of the proposed anti-self defense legislation.

Personally, I'm not optimistic.

I keep hearing a lot of McCain said this and McCain said that. How about some McCain did this or McCain did that? I don't give a rat's about what he says, just what has he done.

McCain looks to be the Perot of the 00's.
