MBA Gyro Jet Pistol

We just discussed the Dardick pistol which fired .38 cal. "Trounds". There is another odd ball, this time from the 60's. Its the MBA Gyro Jet pistol that fires small rockets from its semiautomatic pistol magazine. I own one of these oddities and have 5 rounds of the 13mm rocket propelled ammuniton left. A more detailed discription is in the current Blue Book on page 799. My late father purchase this gun back in the 60's and I inherited it, but I have never fired it. It looks like a childs toy gun but is a repeating magazine fed semiauto rocket firing handgun. Has anyone else got one of these rare gems in their collection?...7th :)

Could you take some pictures of it?
We can help you post them if you like...

The Gyro Jet was a very interesting gun indeed...

Ahhh....
But are they BODY heat seeking rockets ? ;)

Accuracy was horrid from what I remember. The rocket depended on the jets in its base to provide the rotation of the projo. If the holes were not machined correctly, the projo would not fly straight. Close range emergy was lousy also, not enough speed built up in the first 15 -20 feet to do any thing.

The concept didnt get enough development. It was killed of early on. I like the idea of gaining energy over distance.
Think about that a second... If your gun fired a round that kept accelerating the farther it went. Too a point of course.
I can see a lot of advantages to that.
close range you got the power for deer, farther out you got the power for Elk... and a little farther still you could take an elephant. Sweet. Who knows where that could have gone!

I had a book on hand a picture of this Gun and how it was developed. I will write more about it when I see the book tonight. I tried to paste a picture hereon but it is not a success to me.

It was discontinued because the normal cartridge of today that we are using is far better and almost the same concept than that of a Gyro Jet. It is the same flying missile.

Thanks,

George, the idea of building velocity over distance sounds OK, but if the muzzle is pressed against the intended victim, the little rocket just sits there and fizzes. Not much good for short range use. Accuracy was affected not only by machining of the jets but also by the changing weight of the projectile and uneven burning of the propellant charge. It would probably have been better to use a single jet and spin the projectile with rifling.

Yes, I have one, and have fired it a couple of times. Six rounds of ammo left.

-It was said, that Gyrojet Pistol was an experiments in replacing powder as the propellant.

-To use a small rocket in place of a conventional bullet, was not logical thus it was not a great success.
