Mayor Daley now wants to confiscate houses

The mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley wants to pass an ordinance that allows the city to tear down garages from absent landowner which are in terrible condition around the city without due process. In this new ordinance absentee landlords who own houses that are abandoned must hire a night watchman, pay a $50 fee, and get $300,000 insurance. Getting insurance sounds easy but try getting it in certain neighborhoods. Most of those abandoned building wouldn't be abandoned it they had insurance at an affordable rate. The biggest problem facing most landlords around Chicago is the tenants bill of rights. It favors the tenants. If the tenants apartment is in need of repairs caused by the tenant (most likely), the tenant can refuse to pay the rent until the damage is repaired. If a tenant is smart he can get away with not paying rent for months. This is especially true in Winter, if he has children. The law protects the tenant from being evicted when it is below 40 degrees if he has children. Most owners think that when the tenant is finally thrown out the problem is over, guess again. The apartment will in most cases need a complete face lift. If the absentee owner don't comply with the new ordinance, the city can take over their property and sell it to developers without a court hearing. I wonder how much money mayor Daley got for pushing this bill from developers.

I guess banning handgun and recently semi automatic rifles isn't enough. It is amazing how our rights are being taken away from us in this country. In the past Americans didn't trust big government. They figured big government would take away their rights which they fought hard to get. That is why the Federalist made the Bill of Rights. So that American would be guaranteed what they fought so hard to get: freedom of religion, speech, and press. The right to assemble, the right to protect themselves from whoever threatened their rights, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and so on. It looks like they were right. People nowadays are easily fooled and the government is easily moved to convert our rights into privileges.

When he was in the hospital a few days ago,, I secretly wished he would die. Terrible thing to wish on somebody, but we all have to go someday.

My wife, who's from Chicago, wonders why I swore never to move there. I would like to present exhibit A. What a scumbag.

How, just how do characters like Daley, Clinton and any number of others ever manage to get into office, in the first place. Did they all manage to somehow "cheat", and if so, where oh where were "the proctors"?

jcoyoung......THey thought he had a heart attack but it was high blood pressure or anxiety something like that. I kinda wished the same thing ;) awful isn't it? I also wondered if he did die who takes his place? He has been Mayor forever, Jane Byrne before him and I think his Dad before her. Its been Daley city for years now. Time to end that and get someone new in. Sure glad the crime rate hasn't dropped at all since he banned handguns. In fact, I think its gone up hasn't it? The gang bangers are happy that no one will shoot back at them now. UGH! I hate Chicago!

alan, they offer, "something for everybody". Of course it's something for everybody at everybody's expense, minus the funds used for government administration (read "squandered").

He's a Daley and a Democrats. Democrats named Daley traditionally carry up to 20% of the deceased community, which doesn't sound all that significant until you realize that the other 80% doesn't vote, for the most part. The fact that the Democrats in Chicago have such overwhelming support from the deceased community is a testament to their willingness to work hard and help the voters by voting for them. Other parties in Chicago continually refuse to do this despite evidence that if they don't, very few members of the deceased community can be persuaded to go to the polls on their own, and despite the fact that no member of the deceased community has ever registered a complaint against the Democratic method, so obviously they have no problem with it.

Maybe I can convince my dog to move to Chicago so he can vote in the next election. Then again, I wouldn't want to submit my pooch to such cruelty.

Sounds like a scene from "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. How horrifying, and it could be coming to any state in the country before long.

Miss D...

Richie Daley already has brain damage, so what's a little blood pressure going to change. Ironicly, the only chance Chicagoans have to get Daley out of the Mayor's office would be when he dies.

His hospitalization certainly concerned many of his cronies (mostly in the media). Half the City contractors are either Daley family members or on a major payola scheme with kickbacks to Richie.

If you remember correctly, Harold (pantie wearing) Washington died in office, which was then handed over to Eugene Sawyer. I'm pretty sure Daley beat out (off) Sawyer in the election. I believe Jane Byrne came before Washington. She was famous for her one week "stay" at the Cabrini Green housing projects to show (smoke and mirrors) just how "safe" it was to live there. The cameras never did show her coming and going everyday in a bulletproof limo, or the security detail she had surrounding her every move.

I'm convinced that a left wing Democratic Mayor is simply synonymous with any major metropolis. Chicago is no different. Anywhere you have so many entitlement programs, public housing, food stamp programs, and nearly half of all City residents working for the government, you'll get a liberal left winger like Daley. They just give the "people" what they want (err...beg for).
