The mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley wants to pass an ordinance that allows the city to tear down garages from absent landowner which are in terrible condition around the city without due process. In this new ordinance absentee landlords who own houses that are abandoned must hire a night watchman, pay a $50 fee, and get $300,000 insurance. Getting insurance sounds easy but try getting it in certain neighborhoods. Most of those abandoned building wouldn't be abandoned it they had insurance at an affordable rate. The biggest problem facing most landlords around Chicago is the tenants bill of rights. It favors the tenants. If the tenants apartment is in need of repairs caused by the tenant (most likely), the tenant can refuse to pay the rent until the damage is repaired. If a tenant is smart he can get away with not paying rent for months. This is especially true in Winter, if he has children. The law protects the tenant from being evicted when it is below 40 degrees if he has children. Most owners think that when the tenant is finally thrown out the problem is over, guess again. The apartment will in most cases need a complete face lift. If the absentee owner don't comply with the new ordinance, the city can take over their property and sell it to developers without a court hearing. I wonder how much money mayor Daley got for pushing this bill from developers.
I guess banning handgun and recently semi automatic rifles isn't enough. It is amazing how our rights are being taken away from us in this country. In the past Americans didn't trust big government. They figured big government would take away their rights which they fought hard to get. That is why the Federalist made the Bill of Rights. So that American would be guaranteed what they fought so hard to get: freedom of religion, speech, and press. The right to assemble, the right to protect themselves from whoever threatened their rights, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and so on. It looks like they were right. People nowadays are easily fooled and the government is easily moved to convert our rights into privileges.
