I recently purchased a new .22 cal rifle which has an 11 mm rail for scope mount. In setting up my scope, I decided to sight it in at 44 ft (arbitrary, but happens to be where the target is).
I am using a Burris 4.5-14x32 timberline scope and 1" x 11mm base high rings to get over the iron sights. I notice that the initial windage error seems excessive. I have placed the scope's windage and elevation adjustment knobs at their center positions, noting that there are 6.5 turns full scale on these knobs.
The initial error is 2.25" at 44 ft which calculates to about .24 degrees or 14.6 MOA. The scope cannot quite correct for this degree of error. It's specs say it does 30 MOA which would be +/- 15 MOA. And I wouldn't want to use all my windage just to center the shot with no wind anyway. The elevation is out of range as well but I suppose I can shim that.
I did put about 30 mil of 5 mil aluminum shim into the rear loop (where you are not supposed to shim) and I can get it back on target with some turns on the windage. I am afraid this will damage my scope, though.
I could split the shim between the front and rear loop, I suppose.
Should I sent the rifle back?
If not, how should I adjust? I do note that there are some windage adjustable rings available. The first one is Weaver, so I would first have to add a Weaver conversion plate to the 11mm:
