Yup just a barer model of the mossberg 500 seems to be exactly the same action and if its good enough for the US military its good enough for me.
 
I have both a 500 and an 88. Honestly, side by side, they really are almost identical, except the maverick was 80 bucks less.

There have been a couple recent threads about the maverick if you want more opinions and a more detailed breakdown of it vs. the 500.
 
Those 88's are a great shotty! Got mine well used for about 100 bux at the local pawn shop. Never fails to go boom, and its fired a lot! of shells lol. I take it waterfowling, as I don't care much about it due to the price. Not pretty, but puts meat on the table!

I bought a Maverick 88 used last December in Florida and I love it! I have two 870s, A Mossberg 835 Turkey Gun and a Mossberg 590 and I shoot the maverick the most. I paid nothing for it compared to the 590, which is my 'HD' gun, and it takes all the abuse I can give.

Just put three hundred rounds of 00 nine-pellet, slugs and #6 shot through it and it handled flawlessly. I can't say enough about it. It came with the heat shield, which I like, and a Speedfeed II stock. Nice and clean, good price, free Bulldog soft case. I'm going to buy my brother one for Christmas. They really rock. I'm a mad 870 guy but, hey, the price is right!
