Maverick 88 opions needed

I spotted a Maverick 88 with 18.5 inch barrel and pistol grip at a pawn shop. They want $199.99 for it, but it has some bad rust all over it. I am wanting to talk him down and just remove the rust and reblue it. How much do you think is reasonable to pay for it?

If its used try to knock it down to at least $150. Thats what they run for when they are new. I bough a new mossberg 500 with an 18.5'' barrel and a 26'' barrel with a threaded choke for $219.99 at big 5 about a year ago.

If you cant get it for $175, walk away. it isnt worth more than that. Save up and get the 500.

Sounds way too high. Academy has the 28'' barreled version NEW for 170.

I purchased a 3 year old 870 for about 199, so I figure you should not pay more than 120 or so.

way too high!

i bought a brand new maverick 88 WITH 2 boxes of slugs and a pass for an hour of range time for $215

Pawn shops can screw ya (I don't frequent them much myself). $100 would be it's worth, if that, since you said it had rust on it.

I'd avoid it if you can't get it for $100. It may be rusty outside but unless they let you disassemble it in the shop, who knows where else.

That being said a pawn shop is all about making a profit from items they get on a lower price. It doesn't mean there aren't deals out there. I remember one guy who got an Egyptian Maadi AK from a pawn shop for around $275.00 and it was mint minus the box.

you can get a brand new mossy 500 with the 2 barrels at big 5 about every other month for a little more than what he is asking for the maverick.

a rusted up maverick 88 would be lucky to fetch 100 around here.

i just sold an 88 with the 24inch barrel and like new for $145 locally and I was asking what I thought was too much.

i would seriously pass on that gun for that price and yes pawn shops are there to stick it to you. I would offer him 100 for it then work up from there and stop at the $140ish range (that is out the door including taxes). anything higher and you are seriously being taken to the cleaners.

Mavericks are fine shotguns and will do anything the 500 will except mount a scope/ghost rings (receiver isn't pre-drilled, but perhaps other mounts are available) and change fore ends.

I say use that barrel rust to your advantage and talk him down to about 130/140. Provided the internals are in great shape I'd call that a fair deal.

Look for a brand new 88, they run around $200. Why buy used for a price that you could buy a new one for?

I am so glad I went with an 88 instead of a 500 or that 590. My $215 88 has been through well over 12k rds in the past year and it is going strong. I absolutely love it.
