Maveric (Mossberg) 88 comments?

While at Walmart this afternoon I was looking at both the Mossberg 500 and the Maveric 88. They seemed to be the same shotgun except for the design of the safety system.

The Maveric was about $50 cheaper than the 500. Does anyone have both and could you compare them please?

Mike

They are the same basic gun.
My first shotgun was a Maverick 88, vent rib, 28", fixed modified choke. I got it very well used (still have it). It is major ugly. It has a couple of features that make up for the ugly. It is absolutely reliable, and it shoots. It will break clay as well as I can (which is not saying much). For the pittance I could get for it to trade up, I decided to keep it.
The only Mossberg I have to compare it to is a 20" 500 with a 7 shot magazine. I bought it for home defense purposes, but have used it for 3-gun matches. It also is absolutely reliable, and shoots well for its intended use (cylinder bore, 20-25 yds).
The tang safety on the Mossberg is a nice feature. It depends on how important $50 is to you and what your intended use is. Consider that $50 is the price of 10-12 boxes of ammo. The difference between $100 and $150 is substantial, but the difference between $200 and $250 is minimal when you consider a lifetime of use.

I bought a maverick 88 because I couldn't afford a 500, the only differences I know of are the fore end(there's nothing wrong with it, it is just built simpler than the 500) and the safety is in a different place and is a wee bit stiff, but this is nothing I can't overlook because the overall package is a reliable, good shooting and fun shotgun. I'm going to put a folding stock on it soon. Oh yeah, some mossberg 500 parts are interchangeable like barrels and stocks and chokes. If you have the extra cash go ahead and get a 500, you can put a forward pistol grip on it, but if you are on a buget or don't want to spend too much, get the maverick and you won't be sorry.

I'll drop my 2¢ in the plate for the Maverick 88, but I've never shot a Mossberg.

My younger brother bought the 88 several years ago and soon after decided it was just too long for him (not sure exact length, but the looong barrel that this particular one came with... along with the buttpad on the stock added up to a length that always got caught on his clothes and felt odd to him.) At 6'3", I'm a larger frame guy than he and it fits me perfectly. In fact I've shot alot of shotguns and the 88 is by far the best performing clay/bird slayer for me, personally. Fits like a glove, and I definitely don't mind it being a little more rugged and lightweight because of the corners that were cut in manufacturing. Just my opinions, of course... but it works for me.

I believe it comes in at 4 feet/48'' I have shot a mossy 500 and the only difference I can feel is the forend, mine is the ribbed type that is on the 590a1 and the 500s was smooth wood. Oh, and yes, it does bust clays very well.

Maverick Arms is "owned & operated" by O.F. Mossberg & Sons.

I have a Maverick Mdl 88 I bought around 1990 or so, and have had no issues with it. If you go to Mossberg's website, you will see a link to Maverick Arms.

or go direct to Maverick:

MOST of the parts for the Mossy 500 are direct fit to the Maverick, other than some of the safety components. The Maverick has the trigger-guard style safety, while the Mossy has the 'tang-style' control..So, if you had both, and swapped fire control groups around, you could end up with a Mossy with 2 safeties, and a Maverick with none.

WARNING! ! WARNING! ! "Danger, Will Robinson."

I HAVE NOT TESTED this theory, nor do I recommend it, just something I have heard.

My Maverick came with the 28" modified choke 'no-rib' barrel; I have since installed the 18-1/2" plain cylinder choke "Homeland Defense" barrel.

I've thought about picking up a short barrel for my 88. Where did you get yours and how much did it cost, roughly? I watched one go for over $60 on ebay a while back... I bid it up to $40 and bowed out.

You should

be able to find a "short" barrel for alot less than that. Was at a gunshow this weekend, and although I wasn't really looking closely (don't need a shotgun barrel for anything right now), seems going rate was $25-30 for decent one that maybe needed the bluing touched up.

Mossberg lists the 18-1/2" plain (no vent-rib, one bead) cylinder choke barrel for $74. I bought mine from a local stocking gunshop for $69; you may be able to find it for less.

I bought a Maverick as my first HD gun. I was poor and could not afford what I thought I wanted. After having my 88 a while I decided I would "trade up" to a Mossberg 500. After handling one I decided that even though the 500 has much better fit and finish, the different fore end it uses rattles and feels much cheaper to me than the ole 88. Besides, the Maverick is made in El Paso, TEXAS!
