Mauser w/o trigger?

Does anyone have any information regarding a K98 that does not have the normal trigger?

The 'trigger' is a button located on top of the stock, behind the bolt, that you press with your thumb.

The rifle was picked up by a GI from a German that no longer needed it. The gun was brought back to the states where it was sporterized (barrel shortened, military sights and stock replaced.

The only thumb trigger rifle produced in any number was the Winchester 99, a .22 of John Browning design. But it sticks in my head that somewhere, sometime, I saw a picture of a centerfire rifle with a thumb trigger. Pity he sporterized it.

not really sure, but could it be a variation of a winter trigger? Something similar to the wither trigger that could be attached to the M1 Garand trigger?
