My shop has a few of them. They go from $150 to $250. They seem like a good buy for the money. They are 8mm. A few are some other caliber,6.5mm? Anyway some are Yugoslavian, some Turkish. I don't know if any are German. I have seen 8mm ammo for $75/1000rds. From it's ballistics on paper it seems close to our .30-06. What is your opinion of these rifles? Can never have to many right:)

You sure cannot have too many! The 98 Mauser action is as good as any. In fact that action was the basis for so many fine rifles that were built in the 50's and 60's, before factory rifles became as accurate as they are today. Hell even the US Springfield, the pre 64 Win 70 etc. are all descendants of the 98 Mauser. One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was in about 1971 or 72. I had a friend that had bought a second hand .22 rifle at a gunshop and he wanted to return it for a .410 shotgun. He was afraid to go and ask if the owner would take it back, so I went with him because I knew the owner very well (preferred customer :D). well when we got there there was no problem what so ever in the exchange, but while they were doing paperwork, I was browsing and found 2 98 Mausers for $24.95 each, and DID NOT BUY THEM!

Hey 45Automan, go for it; I recommend the 8MM Mauser very highly. In fact, the two that I own are very recent acquisitions. Mine are both German from 1939 and 1943, one with 3rd Reich stamps. Many of them out there are in lousy shape, so be sure you shop around for one in good condition. Another option is to have the stock refinished for about $100. Ammo bought in quantity from AIM is pretty cheap (7-8 cents/round) The Yugoslav Mausers are supposed to be pretty good too, and be sure to get one with that neat crest on the receiver, should you opt for a Yugoslav.

Yep the 30 06 and the 8 MM are kissing cousins and like you said the 8MM is very cheap now. I like the K98 also but I have a VZ 24 that I like better. IMO the Swede are the best to have and the 6.5 is softer on the shoulder. I would pick one up if the condition is at least was very good+.

I have a Swede 6.5x55 Bolt Action. It's a nice shooter and a keeper but the ammo is $12.99 per box of 20. That is at the local gunstore. Prices in Gunlist and SGN are similiar.

I have a couple of Mauser 98,s that have been sporterized and shoot like a house of fire. Both are 30-06's. This year I used one to take a buck. I don't think that you can go wrong with a German 98.

Best of luck....Cag
