Mauser Question

Is there any way to remove the play in a mauser bolt? In the open/back position there is too much "wiggle" for my liking.I understand the design of the bolt is suppose to have this play. What I would like to know is there a way to modify the bolt/reciever to be tighter.

How much money do you want to spend on trying to get rid of that "wiggle"? For maybe 5 or 6 grand someone might make you an action that is really tight. For maybe only a couple of grand, a top quality gunsmith might be able to take the play out of the bolt.

IMHO, live with the "wiggle."

What I thought

The wiggle is the only thing I dislike about the mausers.I already have 4 customs built on various actions (All from parts guns).Having a rifle that is built for you,by my own design, makes shooting them so much more enjoyable. The Mausers give me the classic look that I want, but I think I will try a more modern action for my next custom. But I did want a 45/70 siamese...

Mauser bolt ...

If it were mine I'd live with the wiggle. That wiggle has absolutly no bearing on the function and acuracy of the rifle. Besides that your chances of finding someone to fix that "problem" without it being cost prohibitive is almost nill - in fact it is more likely you will find someone that will screw up your gun.

I have 5 custom Mausers - all have that wiggle you are talking about. With my Mausers I look at it like this - it isn't a problem; therefore, there is nothing to fix.

Great rifles either custom or as issued.

That wiggle is one of the reasons that Mausers function so well in mud and snow. Either learn to love it or switch to another action type.

Right on the money Clemson.
Remember, Mausers are MILITARY rifles. That's why I could shoot championships with them in 20 degrees C below zero and in 40 C plus without a hitch.
Do not live with it, TREASURE IT

play

Sir:
Yes, I have thought about this for years. If you even fitted a shim (perish the thought) in that rear ring in the action, even that probably wouldn't take out all the slop because the rifle is designed like that. Even the new 798 Remington rifle (made with the Zestava action) has slop!
As has been said, the rifle is a military weapon but its design is inherent, even in its sporting guise.
This action is, (in my humble opinion) the best action in the world! It is made of quality, tough, case hardened steel even today, parts are interchangeable from guns made in different countries, it, when it has a case failure, doesn't shatter like a chrome moly steel but expands, sets-back and stretches! Their barrels are poldi steel, I'm told, and they are made very thin compared to modern rifles.
They are the easiest action to fit a bbl. to, and can be modified to take a 458 Winchester or any other American or European caliber (just about).
When I detail a Mauser action I see its strong extractor and the positive controled round feed and the extraction I marvel! The thickness of the reciever ring - compare it to a Remington 700 action thickness>
