mauser question in ohio

i have the mauser in the pics below. i would like to turn this into a 7mm mauser as i have heard this is the most inexpensive conversion for this rifle. anybody have a guess as to what it will cost to work on this rifle? i don't need it to be pretty, just shoot.

SARCO carries new N.O.S. barrels in 7x57 but no prices listed ,so i guess you have to call.Usually military barrels in their ads, in the shotgun news never runs over $100.Plus finding a local gunsmith to re barrel will probably run you another hundred.

I don't know your skill level but the more you get do by a shop
But at my prices with a A&B barrel, about 350.00 with a scope conversion added
Your cost may be lower or higher depending on parts cost/labor.

My advice is find a used rifle and leave the Masuer as is.
Because it maybe better/cheaper that way.

if the barrell of this rifle was good, i wouldn't worry about it and i would shoot 8mm through it. however the barrell is trashed inside.

this rifle was given to me by a family member, so i have nothing in it.

Looks like the scope conversion is already done, but I too question the value of the conversion, unless the original barrel is toast not only by looks but in test shooting. 8x57 ammo can still be have as surplus for less than 30 cents a round, and all manufacturers produce quality modern ammo for it.

Here in Ohio, try calling Jim Caudill (The Mauser Man in his gun show banner) and see if he's still doing that kind of work. He did a Mauser 98 switch barrel gun and some other work for a friend of mine that was reasonable, but that was 20 years ago. The last number I had for him was 740-965-2185.

I cleaned the barrel and looked through it, and its a mess. My family member that gave it to me said that it had ammo through it that was corrosive. I would be nervous about shooting it
