mauser or mosant

hi i am basically going to use this for deer/varmint and was wondering which i should pick and the value of the both of them in condsideration-thanks

Wood is very solid, with no cracks and only very small dings and scratches. Bluing 95%. Bolt number does not match, but this is not unusual for these guns. Bore is darkened, with some pitting, but rifling is still very strong. its 68$-mosin-listed as VERY GOOD-model 1891 russian 7.62x54

and then the mauser-is a turkish and 1903 with listed as good

and another mosin-Dated 1952 - a Cold War relic! Has permanently attached folding bayonet. Bluing 90%. Wood in great shape - no cracks, few dents and dings. Bore somewhat darkened, with some pitting in grooves, but rifling is very strong.for 68$ also and then is this better than the other 1?

also is there a problem with shooting different kinds of ammo in the mosin like the mauser?-thanks and about the differnt kinds of ammo and things like that-also will the 7.62x54 have a bit less recoil than the 8x57 and also the mosin sounds a little bigger-any comments are appreciated!!!

I own several of each. I would choose the M91 over the Turk Mauser, but I have never had a problem with my 95 turk.

The M91 is a little long to be hoofing around thru the woods, IMHO.

Have you considered the Russian M44 Moslin-Nagant? It is a lot shorter and handy in the woods. It is basically the same firearm as the M91 but modernized during WW2 by the Russians.

www.aimsurplus.com has M44 in arsenal wraps for sale for $79 including shipping (not positive on price). The guns are not in thier website yet, but they are selling fast......

Good luck!

AT AIM THERES.....

Clean 1938 Mauser rifles! The 1938 Mauser is the updated version of the 1903. Features a straight bolt handle, 5rd fixed box magazine, 29" bbl and is 49" overall. Each includes a free bayonet w/ scabbard. Fair to Good. for 40$

and Mosin Nagant 91/30 Rifles 7.62x54R
Original WWII Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30 in Overall Good condition. Only $39.95ea. Buy five or more for only $35.00 each!-and 10 more$ for hand picked which i might do-

is soft point or other kind of ammo like that BT-HP etc- as easy to get and as cheap as the mauser?-btw i am not going to go trecking through the woods with this much-i think i am getting hte rifle for 50 bucks handpicked- seems good enough-this is mainly a coyote gun/or deer until i get another rifle such as an SKS or another commercial brand.

Russian Moisant M-44

For what it's worth. I bought a M-44 for for $58. Put an inexpensive drop-in syn. stock on it, a B-Square drop-in scout scope mount on it, a red dot sight, polished trigger, and ended up with a dandy little scout rifle that shoots under 2" at 100yds for very little money. It's one of my most fun rifles to shoot. The 7.62x54 rivals the 06 and ammo is cheap. It was a fun project.

I'd have to agree that the Mosin M91 is one heck of a long rifle to go dragging through the woods.

I have both an M44 Mosin-Nagant and a Yugo Model 48 Mauser/8mm. They both shoot well, but the Mauser is definitely a more refined gun.

For the same bullet weight, the Mauser seems to punch my shoulder less. Others have expressed the same.

The availability of inexpensive surplus ammo (lots of cheap practice) is certainly part of the attraction. It's been my experience that the Turkish surplus 8MM burns cleaner than the equivalent Russian 7.62x54R.

Both would make good deer guns. I lean towards the Mauser, but that doesn't mean I'd give up my M44.

Solution: Get both!

Hi,

I would go with the Mauser hands down. The action is far smoother - you can feel it easily. The safety is easier to manipulate, the ammo is not rimmed like 7.62x54R, which will give you more reliable feeding. The strength of the Mauser action is legendary - a consideration when firing surplus ammo. 8mm ammo is more widely available, and new production hunting ammo is much more inexpensive then the equivalent Mosin ammo.
I have a 91/59 that is a nice clean little carbine, but due to the tiny buttstock area, it punches the hell out of my shoulder. Accuracy goes WAY down after just a few shots. OTOH, I can shoot the Mauser all day with little or no discomfort.

YMMV
