I rececently purchased a target M98 22-250 bull barreled.I am having feed problems with this rifle. It will dislodge the the rounds from magazine, before feeding into the chamber, while working the bolt slow.If I work the bolt fast it will chamber the rounds okay. Also, will only feed this way with Winchester ammo. With Wolf ammo it jams completey. Is there a way to modify the feed ramp and magazine well to work the short action ammo? This rifle was a flea market purchase. Great cherry stock, scope mounts, and ajustable trigger for $200.Would love to shoot it but I dont trust the feeding to try it yet.

Friend of mine used to work on such things, back when an American Commoner could buy obsolete military surplus rifles by mailorder. He says he and others in the field seldom bothered to adjust the magazine to handle the cartridges they were rebarrelled for. They were for target and varmint shooting and a single shot was all that was required. I'd get a Score High Benchrest Follower which is really a loading tray for convenient single shot operation and not try to tinker with it.

Well, having modified a few Mausers (although never one in .22-250), the list of problems could be endless. For starters, you trying to feed a very shot cartridge in a long magazine (unsless its been modified)..Modifying the cartridge guide on the magazine is my first thought. But, all kinds of othe modifications may be necessary. I'm with most every one else---It's now a single shot rifle.

single shot

Beside putting the follower ,is there any mods that I have to do? Will the extractor engage correctly?

Check the specs for the 8mm case and the 22-250 case and see if there is a big difference in rim thickness or some other dimension. Might be that the controled feed of the mauser just is not picking up the rim of the case or is too loose and is letting loose once the round clears the mag. Just my .02

rim thickness .049/diameter .473 on both 8mm and 22-250

Dear Sir:
You mught need to shorten the magazine with a block.
Harry B,

I tried the detachable magazine for the M98 for short action ammo.Same problem.Searching the forums , blocking the mag well and extending the feed ramp are mentioned. No "how-to" to be found.
I think the feed ramp is the problem. The bullet tip is not in contact with anything as it leaves the mag well.
I am going to have the headspace checked.I ordered the score high follower to try.I would prefer not a single shot though.
Any advice on the feed ramp would help.

Roger

The bullet is not supposed to touch the feed ramp as it is chambered. The round is supposed to slide out from under the feed lips and up under the extractor as you feed it. I have the same problem with my Mauser 22-250 if I work the bolt too slow. The taper of the case is what determines how fast it exits the magazine, and the 22-250 has a lot of taper.

Short of altering the magazine with a block, which requires a shorter follower and spring, the easiest fix is to alter the feed lips on the bottom of the receiver rails to retain the short case longer.

If this is done right, your feed troubles will go away. The problem is that I can't tell you in words how to do that; it is something I learned by a lot of trial and error.

thanks

Going to convert to single shot.I took it to a gunsmith today and the headspace was off.He said he can work the extractor to snap over the case rim to make it work better as a single shot and headspace it.I was going to order High score follower from Midway, but with their minimum shipping it is $23 on a $12 item.:barf: I'll try ebay.
