Mauser m48a Yugo with Bipod, Question

I have been searching all day and can't find a thread to this.

I want to put a swivel mount on the wook stock of my mauser for a bipod. What is the best way to go about this?

What worries me is that the wood is older and i am not sure if it can handle the mount with constant use. (the wood spliting where the swivel is)

I am really not looking for people saying "leave it alone" for historical reasons. I really don't care to hear about nostalgic BS

There are a couple of ways to go about this. You can repair the crack by drilling a hole at each end of the crack and then opening up the crack channel with a thin sabre saw blade. Then epoxy small wood dowels in the drilled holes and mix wood filler with epoxy and fill the enlarged crack. Once dried sand to flush and then refinish the stock.

Or............you can replace the stock. You have already been given a link to boyds. If you want something a little nicer or a different style, Check Richards Microfit. I would not suggest that you get one of their 2nds. People have been disappointed in them. The Yugo 48 is listed as a 99% press fit and is available with the stock stepped barrel channel. They have a lot of different styles, types of wood, and grades of wood. Most of my custom rifles have microfit stocks on them.

It all depends on what your want your end product to look like.

You'll have all sorts of problem putting a standard swivel in a stock with a cleaning rod inlet. You can fill the cleaning rod hole with a glued in dowel and then add the swivel.

I won't say to leave it alone for historical reasons but given the trouble... why not just shoot off your pack or a small sandbag?

Thank you for all the replies. You guys are the reason I use this site above all others.

As for the cleaning rod, I think I am going put the swivle behind the cleaning rod chamber. It will be a little closer than I want but I dont think it will hinder anything. I will be posting updates and pics for you guys to watch the process.

I was looking at the boyd stocks, and they look spot on. I really want to make the milsurp stock work if I can.
