Mauser M-48

I looked at an unissued M-48 the other day. I thoght the follower was supposed to prevent closing the bolt unless you depressed the follower? It looks as if it was altered to allow the bolt to close. Is this a late war alteration, or just a Yugoslavian trait?

thanks

My M48 closes on an empty magazine. So does my VZ24. It's probably a post war alteration.

My M48 is a great shooter! I had it out over the weekend, shooting surplus Turk ammo. From a semi rested seated position as well as prone I was able to regularly hit the head sized steel bell at 200 yds. I was even able to hit the same sized bell at 300 2 ut of 5 times. Not bad for an old gun with old ammo and less than precise sites!

If you haven't already, buy one! They are great shooters.

Make sure you clean out that barrel after shooting the Turk ammo with the corrosive primers. The little Steyr Mannlicher I bought recently has a pretty rough bore due to all available 8x56R ammo being corrosive. The previous owners were not too dilligent with the maintenance, so now the barrel is pitted. It won't ever be a match rifle again, but minute-of-rock accuracy at 100 yards is ok. Still, it hurts to see a nice old warhorse like that with a ruined bore.

An M48 is next on my list, as I don't have a Mauser in my collection yet.
