Mauser k98 Front Band

Hello All,

I am having a very difficult time removing the front band. I have fully depressed the band spring so the little detent ball clears the holder. I have hammer tapped the band using a wooden dowel and other implements but no joy. The rifle didn't have a cleaning rod but I noticed there is something in the rod slot - I can't make out if it is a piece of broken rod. It would have been a very clean break if it is broken. Any and all suggestings would be welcome. Thanks! Tom
 
Get a piece of brass with a sharp corner, then get someone to hold the retainer down while you put the sharp corner where the band is on the barrel, not the wood, and tap it with a hammer.

It should yield to light taps, but sometimes they are rusted on.
