Mauser GEW98

I have a 1917 German Mauser 98 with all matching serial number. The Barrel is severly pitted and rusty... The Action / Bolt /wood are in excellent condition... my question... Should I sporterize it? If so, is it very expensive? or should I keep it the way it is and hold it as a collector's peice... How much can it be worth? Any and all info is much appreciative...

Leave your complete rifle alone. If you want to sporterize a Mauser, buy a VZ 24 or 1909 Argentine with a cracked stock and non-matching numbers.

If the barrel is that bad, the sporterizing is a good idea...

as for expense, that all depends on what you want to do...

I took a mod. 95 mauser bolt and action, spent 600 bucks on it, did all the work myself, and had a SWEET 243 Win, in a Brownells fiberglass stock, and a bushnell scope... (I sold this one)

I then built another 243, Fajen plainsman stock... Leupold optics... roughly $1,000.00

I have a model 95, with the ORIGINAL barrel, cut down, and re-chambered for 284, and a "cock on open" kit in it... re-worked military "C" stock... not bad looking, but not perfect... Leupold optics, and about $400.00 bucks TOTAL...

I ALSO have a Mod. 98, a Check BRNO gun, in a TOP OF THE LINE Fajen sporter, made of burled walnut, with rosewood pgrip cap, forend cap,and butt plate... STILL haven't decided on a caliber...

If you are going to sporterize one, all I can say, is DON'T go "cheap"...

all mine have Douglass Premium barrels (except the 284) and Timminy trigger, Bueller safeties...
