Mauser barrel pitting

I have an 8mm 1946 Mauser with some exterior barrel pitting. To be completely honest, any kind of barrel work scares me. I would like to refinish it myself but I'm afraid I might take off too much metal and make the rifle dangerous. What's a good way to refinish the barrel without taking off too much metal?

Thanks in advance for any help

You might ask to have this thread scooted over to the Gun Smith section. From what I've seen- what you're asking is a rather intricate(?) question. The way I seen it done was by a Smith who was using a very fine toothed bastard file and using it much akin to a draw knife. I've tried it a few times on various scraps- and I'm here to say that it must be some kind of serious craftsman who can put a near polished finish on a round piece of steel and have it look like a near polished finish before it even gets close to a buffer.

.

FWIW, it's nearly impossible to make a barrel unsafe when removing exterior rust with hand (no power) tools, like files & emory cloth/paper.

Have at it, to the best of your ability.

Steel wool won't remove pitting !
"sandpaper " is for wood.
Use abrasives ment for metal and depending on the pitting start with coarse then use fine grit. If you put it in a lathe it will be easier.

If you can find a local machine shop that has a metal lath with 3 or 4 jaw chucks they can chuck up the barreled receiver and turn it with a bastard file or take a very light cut and finish it with wet/dry paper.
For a general job shop this is a can do project and would not be very expensive.
I've done jobs like this and with set up time and tool time less than 3 hours.
