Mauser 98k Bolt Question

I have a Mauser 98k - (dot 1944 mod 98). I bought a Bolt Sleeve from Numrich. I can't screw it into the bolt. All threads are clean and undamaged on both the sleeve and inside the bolt. Does anyone know if either of these were made with different threads - meaning that I don't have a "matching pair". What is the actual thread size? I assume it is a metric size but don't know if guns have special sizes or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to TFL!

My first guess would be one of them is out of spec for the other. You probably guessed that, :)

All the milsurp 98s I have had all had a "standard" size, and parts would interchange. Odds are the bolt sleeve (cocking piece shroud) is "off", or perhaps for a different model. Are you sure you got what you thought you ordered?

Also, sometimes, the replacement parts do need some fitting. Some of what Numrich sells takes some work to make work. I have fitted a few of their scope safeties, and haven't found one yet that was a straight drop in fit, AND could be operated! A few minutes with a file and a stone and they worked fine.

Just curious, the sleeve won't start at all? or it starts and binds when you screw it in? Also, is the new part an after market made one (new?), or a replacement part from period manufacture?

Late war production pressure, and actual sabotage lead to a number of things being dropped (finish items, mostly), but the Germans had been making 98s for some time, so I think the odds on your bolt being out of spec are small.

Maybe you got a shroud for a 95 instead of for the 98? They are similar looking...ok, scratch that, I just checked, and the 95 part will not work on the 98 bolt. I did, however also check a VZ 24 and a 98K, and the entire striker assemblies are completely interchangeable.

I'd say your new part is at "fault" for not matching your 1944 bolt. Maybe its a matter of a few thousandths tolerance, or maybe Numrich sent you the wrong part, I can't tell from here. ;)

Thanks for the reply 44 AMP

Thanks for the reply 44 AMP. You are right on the button. It was the "new" shroud. I took it to a local gun shop and it wouldn't screw into a 98k that they had either but their shroud worked fine with my bolt. I called Numrich and they replaced it immediately. The first one they sent had obviously been used before. The threads looked out of shape but I wasn't sure if it was because guns are made with "special" threads or not. They replaced it with an unused one still with cosmolene on it. After cleanup it works perfectly. Thanks again for responding.

I have gotten a few parts from Numrich that were just not compatible with the rifle for which I had ordered them - e.g., bolt handle for Remington 511, and a few others. I believe some were after-market items manufactured by careless producers. Some could be made to fit, others not. It made me suspect about Numrich's quality, and I remain skeptical.

I ordered a trigger/magazine spring for my Remington Lee 30-40 Krag and it fit but was so wide I couldn't pull the trigger. I bent it and broke it. Eventually I blamed myself but I did trace its shape on paper before it was broken. Frustrated I ordered 2 more from Numrich along with 2 for the Lee Enfield.

The two new remington Lee springs were both of different size yet smaller than the first one I ordered. I took the smallest one and dropped it in and life was good again.

As good as they are there are problems with some of their stuff.

I was bending Mauser bolts all day and tried to see how fast it could be done.

20 minutes per bolt and no problem, but at 10 min the rear of the bolt body got flattened into an oval shape and the shroud would not screw back on.

So I put valve grind compound on the threads and worked it. Then I cleaned and lubricated the threads, and it all worked again.
