Mauser 98

I'm trying to identify the pedigree of a Mauser 98 I purchased back in 1975. It has the following markings:

Amberg 1918 top of receiver

S on barrel
6741 serial # on barrel and receiver
Gew 98 on left of receiver

I'll try to attach a pic. Any info would be appreciated, as some folks think it's similar to an Argentine 1909 Engineer Carbine.

Thanks, Devildog.

The Germans made a Karbiner in WWI, but it was marked "Kar" vs "Gew" (gewehr - rifle). I wish I could see the front end better, but what you have appears to be a cut down "sporterized" rifle.

It should be a good shooter and looks like a nice hunting rifle, though.

I tried to reply yesterday, but each time it would tell me I wasn't logged in, then I'd log in again and it would do the same. I'll try again & send a better pics of the muzzle. And thanks for the reply. Jeff.

That is a real odd-wad, and I have never seen anything like it. I suggest you try another site (sorry, Harley). Try www.gunandknife.com and go to the Mauser forum. There is a lot of expertise there, and I think they can help if anyone can.
