Mauser 98 trigger guards

Are there different length trigger guards and what were they used for?

I have a Timney Featherweight that won't fit in a military guard. The back of the trigger bumps into the bow of the trigger guard, preventing me from assembling the action to the stock.

If you notice, there is a difference between the loop dimensions in both featherweight, and the featherweight deluxe, of 1/4" for the trigger guard loop. Why they don't account for this, and it not fit, I don't know. Measure the loop from front to back, and see what you have, and if the model if shown above.

Thanks DixieGunsmithing. I measured tbe guard and it is 1 3/4" which explains why it doesn't fit. The guard did not come with the rifle and the rifle originally had a 1918 stamped steel trigger guard. The receiver is a 98 and was once a scoped rifle (remade into a regular rifle in 1920).

My guess, then, would be to modify the trigger, which I would hold for a last resort, or find a trigger guard that went with the rifle. You might even be able to modify that guard.

Also, take a notice of the photos of the two featherweight triggers, on Timney's website, in that ones looks like the pivot hole sets back farther toward the trigger than the other model. I don't know this for sure, without measuring them, but the photos seem to show a difference between the standard and deluxe.

Trigger guard is already inletted into the wood. It's easier to replace the trigger unit and save that for another Mauser. Since it's an ex-miltary trigger guard (got some serial #s stamped on it), should the one I order from Brownell's be the Mauser 98K GEW Miltary Timney Sportsman Trigger (883-100-398AN)?

I'd call Brownell's, tell them what you have, and ask if it will fit. Since it's inletted, I am not sure of a match. One would think they would, but then again, they may not.

corsair - Thanks for your suggestion but it is a no can do. The stock is not the issue. The trigger bumps into the inside of the trigger guard, preventing the barreled action from being lowered into the stock. The trigger would have to be bent so it doesn't bump the inside of the trigger guard. It's easier to replace the trigger assembly and save the trigger for another rifle.

Timney Trigger

Ok. I didn't haven't that problem.

With Dixie Gunsmithing's help, I concluded that I have the wrong trigger. The bow is 1 3/4" and the trigger is for a 2" bow. The receiver is a Mauser 98 from WW I and the trigger guard is for a 98K. The guard is a replacement (which was laying around) for the stamped one that came with the receiver.

The guard cannot be replaced easily as it is inletted to the stock which I am making from a blank. It's easier to replace the trigger.

So get the same trigger I got. Look at my pics above.
Not too 'spensive at Midway USA. I have a 98 guard and it fit well.
