Mauser 98 Barrel?

Anyone have a barrel threaded for LR Mauser 98 laying around? Or at the least advice on where to go to find a new-to-me one?

Open to almost anything--this action I have is sound, but the 8mm Mauser barrel on it is rusty and shot out, so time to go.

My dads 1903 Sporter did the same thing as time went by, my brother started it and two of us helped out and got a new barrel on it and its been great fun since.

I think he wants an original military barrel, no? I couldn't tell you offhand where to find one, except to call gunsmiths in the area and see if any have a take-off from a custom project he will sell cheap. Check Gunbroker.

Damn, I can't believe guys are asking up to $175 for these. I cringe at the thought of how many I threw in the trash over the years...

After the first of the year i will have an eight millimeter barrel i am pulling off of a mauser 98 action. It has been chopped to 18 inches but is a descent barrel.

You might try Lothar Walther. They make military-contour barrels for the Mauser and other rifles, meaning they will fit in your original stock with no modification and look right. They'll still shoot like a modern precision barrel, though. 8mm is available, as are a number of other calibers.

If you want an original, I can only suggest Gunbroker or similar sites. That will probably be your best bet.

I got a 7mm Mauser barrel from gunparts (numrich arms), years ago, never mounted it, between mounting, blueing, installing sights and reconfiguring furniture, it would be a $600, job on a $100 brazilian contract DWM carbine. Still have it sitting around somewhere. Try them.

I believe Lothar Walther includes installation in their cost, I forgot to mention. I remember reading that on their old site.

jPKQ, Back in the 50s?, Norway had a fair number of 8mm German 98 mausesr taken from Germans when they surrendered. Norway had 7.62x51 (308) military replacement barrels made to redo them. Israel did the same thing.

Anyway, check Coles Distributing for this Norwegian barrel, old stock still new for $100. Also, Sportsmans Guide had this barrel to sell not too long ago. Not sure they still have it and as I recall price was about the same as Coles.

Thanks for all the info. Not necessary to have an original/war barrel. The stock's already been chopped, so I've no qualms about rebarreling to a different caliber.

458WM would be nice, will contact him.

You should go with a round with a .473 case head. The reason for that is you will not have to do anything to the bolt face . That still gives you any round on the 30-06, 243, 6mm Rem, 250 Savage or any other case with the .473 head. You are also no locked into a factory round, and any wildcat with a .473 head will work. I have a couple of wildcats on 98 actions.

considering the cost of a PROPER rebarrelling, you'd better spend a little more on the barrel you want installed.
I've had really good results using the economical A&B barrels sold by Midway and others.' If you feel really lucky, you can just screw another barrel on the action. The results may not be optimum.

Straight Shooters Gunsmithing in Hillsboro, Virginia can do a proper rebarreling job for around $250. He's not fast, though; expect to wait several months to get your rifle back because he got backlogged due to family illness last year.

I used him for work on my friend's Mosin. He's an old gunsmith who knows his stuff very well, and fixes problems proactively. Even with him finding a couple of extra issues (cracked forearm and a tight chamber on the new barrel that needed opening up) he still got it back to me right around the price he said he said he would.

I offer the recommendation simply because I know it's hard to know who to trust to work on your firearm. There's always the fear that they'll either screw it up or inflate the bill and force you to pay extra to get your gun back. A lot of smiths also have an attitude, too. This guy didn't bat an eye when I handed him a Mosin to work on, and he did good work.

jkpq45n I have close to 50 Mauser take off barrels. I have a few that are 8mm/06. I use transfers and standards when installing a barrel. I can measure case head protrusion on any of the barrels, problem, getting someone to neasure from the 'C' ring to the bolt face. If you are interested send mail.
