Mat stainless...

...is it possible to have a "shiny" brushed stainless pistol done over in just the mat finish, as found on most stainless guns where the top of slide, as well as the grip, etc are mat, but the flats on a 1911, for example, are "shiny". What exactly is done to achieve the mat finish?

yes

The way you get the matte finish on the stainless is to bead blast it with glasss beads or you can do a brushed finish on it using scothcbrite pads.

I prefer the bead blast using a mix of glass beads and 120 grit Aluminum oxide myself.

Thank you...

....I think that a bead blasted stainless steel pistol would be not only more attractive an option than Parkerizing, but would provide the benefits of stainless over carbon steel, insofar as maintenance and rust prevention, not to mention the "stealth" factor required of military issue pistols.

I had a Springfield Champion that I really liked everything except the shiney stainless flats of the slide. I sent it to http://www.ccr-refinishing.com/ and had them bead blast it. I believe it cost about $85. but it was well worth it. I liked it a whole lot better after it came back to me.

You can sometimes find somebody local to do the work and some folks even do it themselves with a simple blaster and the correct beads.

Wire Wheel

 Do not, rpt NOT try to use a wire brush wheel to attempt to achieve a "brushed" stainless look. Wire brushes are your enemy, they will destroy your guns, and if you have a daughter > > > >!!! Also stay away from the local welding shop with a sand blaster. It should go to a qualified smith.

whop whop whop whop whop whop "Huey inbound!!"

85$ to bead-blast?

Dear Shooter:
85$ to bead-blast! If you were close I'd do it for nothing if you disassemble and reassemble!

Lol

Seems some folks charge an arm and a leg and the head too don't they Harry! $40 would be a decent price to pay for a long rifle, any time I do a pistol, I charge normally $25. Also, anytime that you want to bead blast Stainless or aluminum, make sure to use fresh, meaning brand new beads, or beads that are only used for doing Stainless or Aluminum. Otherwise, if they were used on steel, you can and will get rust on your pistol from the beads and the bits of steel left over from blasting.
