Master, I'm ready for my lesson on Lever-action Rifles

I've shot bolt action, semi-auto, and fully auto (military time) rifles, but never a lever action.

To me, the lever action rifle:
- looks cool in western-genre movies & TV shows
- fits in the category of "Yes, it exists but I may never buy one" (ie, triple expresso, thongs, and 190 mph motorcycle)
- has to have a purpose as to why it still exists today, please enlighten me.....
