Massachusetts (MA) laws

Hi, I'm a Massachusetts resident but not a US citizen (I am a Canadian citizen with a US green card/permanent resident status).

Reading the Massachusetts laws, I am confused since in some cases it talks about 'resident' and in other cases 'citizen'.

Also from what I talked to some friends I could qualify for the shotgun permit but not for the handgun permit until I become a US citizen.

Can anybody clarify?

I am not sure about the MA laws but if it would help you get your US citizenship maybe we could trade some of our current citizens to Canada. Kind of a player trade like in baseball. I think half of California's population for a
few dozen Canucks that enjoy firearms would be fair.

This way the libs get their gun control and socialist policies and people who still believe in individual and state's rights can keep them.

Everybody wins! Ya' know what I'm talking a-bOOt, eh? :D

Seriously, I really wouldn't mind it.

To stay on topic MA gun laws IIRC are pretty bad. I hope youhet your green card soon. Good luck.
 
Just to clarify -- I already have a green card.

It goes:

-- foreign alien, non-resident -- i.e. visitor to a state;
-- foreign alien, resident -- temporary worker but living in a state;
-- permanent resident -- same rights as a citizen (supposedly) except for voting -- this is where I am now;
-- US citizen -- after 5 years of living in the US you get the citizenship which gives you the right to vote;


Anyway, that's a summary and the rights are per federal law and of course they do not discuss guns, so that's why I'm asking here ;-)

Legitimate immigrants have always been one of our nation's greatest strengths. I hope you prosper and do well, and set a good example for others.

In theory, if you have a green card, you should be good to go with everything but voting; in reality, you may encounter complications. I live in Colorado, and know not one, but two immigrants who not only own firearms, but have qualified for concealed carry permits.

Not entirely sure but I think you may be able to get your handgun permit, but untill you get full citizenship you will not be able to conceal carry it.
 
That'd be fine -- I'm only interested for target shooting/practice as part of a gun club. But I want to be able to own my own handgun/etc.
