MAS 49/56 Repair ??

I have one of the MAS 49/56 rifles that Century converted (horribly) to .308. It repeatedly fails to extract, case jammed in chamber so tightly that the bolt can barely be forced back for manual extraction, irregardless of the 7.62x51 or .308 ammo tried, and at times ripping a chunk out of the care rim. I've read the JPFO evaluation and tried Mr Toth's contact info at DSTI, also posted private message here for 'Gunsmithing', who seems familiar, but no answer from either. It's pretty clear that it is a gas and a chamber problem--but looking for a gunsmith solution. Has anyone out there had the same problems and found a competent gunsmith to get this rifle running ?

I suggest you fix it your self. I replaced the cut down recoil spring with a original 7.5 spring, I reprofiled the extractor to get a better grip on the .308 case, and I shoot Com bloc steel cased .308 and it runs like a top. I have a rough chamber as well but it doesn't seem to matter. Take expended .308 case and slip it under the extractor it becomes instantly obvious why they won't extract, it barely has any purchase on the case. Here is the greatest article ever on how to fix the Mas, however it is not neccesary to do everything mentioned.

If I ever had any problems with mine again I would get one of these,....
If Starmetal is still making them,

I disagree with most of the posters my chamber is rough as a cob but once the extractor fits better it has no problem with extraction, also replacing the recoil spring is of utmost importance.

Mine runs great it still has plenty gas and my empties go about 15 feet away It could be turned down a little but it runs like a champ and is one of my favorite rifles.

I just picked up a nu-molested one at the gun show in Louisville for $375 looks like new. Guess I did not do too bad, only saw three for sale on 1600 tables.

The gnarly chamber is probably the only severe issue. I am not usually a fan of steel cased ammo in western firearms, but in this case it may be just right. Steel doesn't expand and seal the chamber as much as brass, so it likely won't grab the funky defects as much and aid extraction.

Or you could ask around about polishing out those defects if it can be done without opening it up too much.
