Mas 49/56 conversion in .308?

I found one for $289, imported by C.A.I
St. Alb Vt. I asked if they used a chamber insert. The dealer thinks the barrels have been set back, and re-reamed for the .308. He did admit to mixed satisfaction amongst the customers that have bought them. What do you think about the conversion, and it's reliabilty? (Please, no suggestions as to what other guns that I should pursue instead of this one. :)) Thanks.

I'd stay away from these. They're great in their original chambering, but in .308 I'd stay away. I've had some personal experience with them, and they were troublesome.

I kick myself for not getting one when they were common. Your dealer is corect as to the method of conversion. It is the same as the Mas bolt-action on the market for $100 right now.Their is a problem associated with the conversion, and I think that you can find out about it on the JPFO site, as they tested one for their "Life Preserver" program.

I'd stay away from them as well. I returned the one I bought. It probably would have been better if left in 7.5 French.

Stick with the French calibre. It's more reliable and spare magazines are cheaper. My friend has one and it jams (difficulty in extraction). We already sent it back once to the importer and haven't tried it again. I may wind up polishing the chamber for him.
