Maryland About to pass Built in Lock requirement

Thats right folks while we were all cursing S&W's sellout the governor of Maryland has just about succeded in passing a law which would require an internal hammerlock on all handguns sold in Maryland after 2003.

The republicans who were going to fillibuster to block the bill have conceded defeat.

I wonder if this bill also contains the magazine capacity limits etc similar to the S&W agreement.

If passed in many states this type of bill would force gun makers to make changes or face losing the civilian market.

To get this bill through, Commisar Glendenning did drop the "smart gun" requirements.
The hammer lock may not be too bad. It's already used by Taurus (don't lose that little hex wrench) and should be fairly easily adaptable by other manufacturers (especially on revolvers) at a fairly low cost.
Considering Glendenning and his leftist Attorney General original stated intent was to ban handguns, this is probably the best we're going to see. I didn't read about any magazine limitations in this bill.
I believe one Republican tried to add a "shall issue" CCW amendment to the bill. Alas, that was defeated.

You know, the eastern shore of Maryland has been considering succession for years...we'd welcome them to the Commonwealth of Pensylvania. Maybe this will add more fuel to their fire.

Yea, H&K already has an internal slide lock that is activated with a tool used through the mag well. Doesn't mean you have to use it though :)

Solution to Internal Lock Features.
Lock the thing open or "ON", and then peen the device in that position so it cannot be "Closed". Throw away the key nad carry on as if it wasn't there.

Senator "Benedict" Ferguson Does It Again!

Gun Owners of America E-Mail/FAX Alert

March 28, 2000

Dear Maryland Gun Owner,

Once again Senator Tim Ferguson (R-4) perpetrated "the murder" of a
filibuster.

He was aided and abetted by numerous other so-called "pro-gun"
Senators who didn't have the courage to stand up to the Senate
bosses and Governor Glendening.

Senator Larry Haines (R-5) is one who especially headed for the tall
grass and refused to say anything to keep the filibuster alive.

A filibuster is essentially talking against a bill to forestall a
vote, forever if possible.

A filibuster is maintained as long as one member "has the floor" and
"yields" only to other members who share his or her opposition to
the bill being filibustered. Cloture is a vote to shut off debate
and thus allows a vote on the bill.

If the vote on "cloture" lacks sufficient numbers -- in Maryland it
takes 32 Senators -- then there can be no vote to pass the bill.

On the floor of the Senate in Annapolis last night Senator Tim
Ferguson got the floor, and then gave it to Senate President Mike
Miller, thus avoiding a vote on cloture. Miller then called the
vote to pass the bill. It passed 26 to 21.

GOA supported a filibuster led by Senator Mooney after Senator
Ferguson "chickened out" on Friday and cut a deal to pass SB 211, a
vicious anti-gun bill.

Thanks should go to Senator Mooney (R-3), Senator Jacobs R-34) and
Senator Harris (R-9) who were filibustering.

In a move that was either stupid or duplicitous, Senator Colburn
(R-37) was given the floor, spoke briefly, and then gave the floor
to Senator Ferguson. As stated above, Ferguson then gave the floor
to Senate President Mike Miller.

Ferguson's action forfeited a recorded vote on cloture. But he, and
any other "pro-gun" Senator who refused to "talk" against the bill
(i.e. join the filibuster), is guilty of selling out your rights and
safety.

Action now turns to the House.

Please begin contacting your delegate(s). Oppose SB 211 in any
form.

ml

No matter what anyone tells you, a Senator's refusal to join the
filibuster was an act of surrender to the Governor and of your
rights.

The vote on final passage was empty posturing.

Compromise is where your rights and safety die.

>From Delegates Carmen Amedori and Joseph Getty:

Well, we're going to hear the Senate Bill in our committee on
Friday. The
Chairman decided that he would give the "new version" a hearing, both
sides.
Vice Chair Doory tried to get him commit to limit the sides, but he has
not,
yet. We will vote on the bill Friday night -- We hope to work our
strategy
to kill this bad bill. Also, the NRA will be running commercials --
national and local --showcasing the Gov trying to use and deactivate the
gun
locks. If you haven't seen it, it is a hoot. He can't get the lock
opened
and a cop has to assist him. I think the tagline is going to be
something
to the order of

"Will the state provide you with a Cop for your lock?"

also at the end will be the phone number to the Speaker's Office with a
message to call him. Hopefully NRA members across the country will
unite in
this effort. These commercials are supposed to run starting on
Thursday.
We need to bring all the forces together to put the pressure on the
Speaker
and the Gov. Call your out-of-state friends and tell them to call at

1-410-841-3800 (Speaker Cas Taylor)
mailto:casper_taylor@house.state.md.us

Urge them to call the Speaker and tell him to STOP this BAD BILL NOW

Thanks for your help and support.
