marlin?

The 30 AW is an economy model with birch stocks rather than walnut and IIRC simpler sights. They are sold at Walmart, I'm not sure if it's an exclusive to them.

The 30AW was made as a budget gun several years back but it has been discontinued. They currently make the 336W as their budget gun. They are good guns, just with plain wood. If it has walnut, or maple it is quite possible someone changed the stock. It is not uncommon for birch to have some figure to it. Lots of guys can't tell the difference between birch and walnut anyway.

Marlin makes things complicated by re-using terms. At one time the 336A was the rifle version with a longer barrel, 3/4 mag tube and no barrel band on the barrel. The 336C was/is the 20" carbine with a barrel band and full length mag tube and walnut wood.

At one time they made 2 very similar guns, the 336A, but this one was a budget gun that was just like the current 336W, except that the W had a barrel band, the A had an endcap. Why, I have no idea.

Birch can have curl too. Also, with all of the Marlin 336 variations, the stocks and parts are very interchangeable. Someone could have upgraded the stocks, or it could just be some curly birch, which is what the economy versions of the 336 have.

Here is a 336 or a Glenfield with curly birch (not mine):

Congratulations. Great find. I am looking for a deal in a 30 30 Marlin too. I have a 44 mag and 45-70 and want a 30 30 to add to the mix. You did good. Enjoy a great rifle.

I couldn't beleave it when he told me the price! I figured even if it was the lowest grade rifle marlin ever made I wasn't going to get hurt........
