Marlin shotgun

I have no idea as far as value, but they were sturdy, a tad heavy and an excellent value. Haven't owned on for 25 years, but I liked it as a utility gun. I'd probably pick up another one if I could luck onto one in super shape. Just because....Essex

I looked around some more on line and could find nothing about them.

Did Marlin stop making shotguns and just start again??

I was at their web site and they have a few O/U and side by side there that look interesting if they are in the mid-hundreds range.

"Marlin is importing shotguns from Italy and Turkey.

“We’re bringing in four shotguns from Italy under the L.C. Smith brand name,” said Tony Aeschliman, Marlin public relations and marketing manager. “The two side-by-sides and two over-and-unders are chambered in 12- and 20-gauge.”

The Italian shotguns feature 3-inch chambers and 26- and 28-inch barrels.

“We’re also bringing in guns from Turkey, which we’re offering in the H&R (1871) line. The Pinnacle is an over-and-under in 12- and 20-gauge. There are also four semiautomatic shotguns in the Excell Auto 5 line,” Aeschliman said.

The imported shotguns, which carry the Marlin and H&R 1871 warranty, give Marlin immediate presence in several marketing categories.

“We decided to import, partly because competitors are doing it, but mainly because we couldn’t come up with products like these from a clean piece of paper and produce them in this country. It’s just economically impossible. This is fairly low risk for us, and it puts us into a whole new section of the market,” Aeschliman said."

"COST DIFFERENCES

So did they pull it off? First of all, the 12- and 20-gauge L.C. Smith over/under shotguns are imported from Italy and retail for $1,884 and the Pinnacle 12- and 20-gauge over/under shotguns come from Turkey and retail for $886. Why the cost difference? Martin has hedged its bets. By coming in at two price points with two different brand names and levels of product, Marlin is appealing to two different types of consumers."

WOW 1,900 bucks? I'm sure they are nice guns but why buy a gun that is imported and sold under a different name when others guns are avalible in the same price range and made by the company that sells them?
Seems to me that having a middle man involved can only add to the cost and not the value.

In the case of Turkish guns from the village of Huglu, it seems to be a matter of how much quality the importer is willing to contract for...it's not really a company as such, it's a cooperative with a factory, 100 workshops & 600 craftsmen, etc...

"The shotguns we have to offer are manufactured in Huglu, a small town with a population of 3,500 on the slope of Taurus Mountains covered with pine trees in central Turkey.

Gun craftsmanship was brought to Huglu by two master gunsmiths who learned maintenance and repair of guns while they were in the army during the World War I and started their first workshop around 1914. In a few years, the business became the most popular industry in the town and many other gunsmiths started to work in this business in their separate workshops. They later decided to establish a cooperative to better their production and marketing strategies. Now, there are more than 100 separate workshops, has more than 600 craftsmen, and employs about 500 workers. Approximately 65,000 shotguns are manufactured each year in Huglu, of which 15,000 is over/unders, 10,000 is side-by-sides, 15,000 pump action, and 25,000 semi automatic models. The interior area of the main factory building is 10,000 m2 and has 50,000 m2 separate units.

From either the shotgun action or artistic value point of view, what makes our shotguns more valuable is the hand craftsmanship performed on them. Therefore, most of the work is carried out by hand with a mastery of seventy-five-years of experience. Hand craftsmanship is especially more important on over/under and side-by-side models.

Export models presented at our web site have been designed. In order to be able to compete with the world's top brands in international market, export models are provided with the top quality workmanship and most reasonable prices. Only the most experienced craftsmen of Huglu work on these models."
