Marlin serial number question.

I ran into a JM stamped 336W this afternoon. It's a nice rifle but I only want it if it's a true JM rifle. I'm not a member at the marlin forum so I hope I can get an answer here before the rifle sells. The serial number is 00048587. I can't find anything on the number on google. Can anyone give me a manufactur date or tell me if this is a true JM and not a Remington with a left over JM stamped barrel. Thanks.

On MOST Marlins made after 1972 you subtract the 1st 2 digits of the SN from 100 to get date of manufacture. If the 1st digits were 02, then it would be a 1998 made rifle. 00 is 2000, 99 would be 2001, etc. Before 1972 there are some online sources that can help with figuring out the code.

There are a few exceptions with limited runs of certain guns, but this is pretty accurate for most common Marlins.

I got it! It's beautiful except for the red head scope on it. The blurring is about perfect. I'm unable to load a pic of it but it's beautiful. I paid 250 bucks for it at a gun shop going out of business. I got lucky for sure it was in a corner covered up with a couple nosing nagants. Thanks for the quick info. This is my second true marlin 336. My other one is from the 70s. It was my grandfathers old gun. Love it.
