Marlin Model 25

I stopped by my LGS at lunchtime today (yes I'm addicted) and found a used Marlin Model 25. It looks good maybe 85% - 90% condition. I don't know what year it was made but it had a nice wood stock, iron sights and on the barrel it says 22 S/L/LR. It is on sale for $99. Anybody own one or had one? What is the going price? I'm pretty sure if it's there tomorrow at lunch I'm buying it unless I find out about some crazy flaw about it.

As always, thank you for your input!

Happy safe shooting!

Bought it.

Well, I couldn't resist. I went ahead and bought it. Here are some pics.:D

Gave it a thorough cleaning. Barrel seems to be in excellent shape. The trigger pull is a little stiffer than I'm used to. Hope it shoots decent. :)

First Trip to the Range

I finally got a a chance to shoot my new (to me) model 25. Once I adjusted the rear sights, I was basically shooting two inch groups at 50 yards. I also started to shoot my spinner target and I was hitting the large paddel 100% of the time, the middle about 75% and the small one around 50% of my shots. I was shooting off a bench with a shooting bag. I was using CCI Standard Velocity, 100 rds. No malfunction of any type. The trigger is better than I anticipated.

There was another guy shooting there and he told me about their silhouette target shoot and invited me to come out and shoot with their group. It's iron sights only and standing unsupported. So I tried shooting my target standing unsupported and wow my group was expanded to about 6 inches at 50 yards. I made my adjustment and was able to hit steel targets placed at 50, 60, 75, and 100 yards. Still have a lot of practice before I can compete.

Overall, I am satisfied so far with my new rifle and I hope to get better with more range time.

I have a Marlin 15, the single-shot version of the 25, it was my first rifle. It's a fine weapon and mine is still very accurate even after 25 years (1986.) In fact, I just bought a new scope for it to replace the cheezy 4X Tasco I have on it now.

Easy to clean from the breech, easy to fieldstrip, reliable. ...and $99! Whoo-hooo!

From what I've seen on GunBroker, they are going for $150-200... so you got a steal at $99!!! ...and it sure looks to be in good shape. A lot of people knock the Marlins, I think they are a fine weapon.

My records show I bought a Model 25 in 1987 (when I was in the Army) for $89... from Service Merchandise (if you remember those places...) I sold it to a friend of mine.

I picked up a beater Model 25 in the late 80's as a 'kid gun' project rifle for my oldest boy, who was 7 at the time. I was working part time in a machine shop so I had access to all the neat stuff therein. I cut the barrel to 16 1/2", refinished the stock and reversed the safety, which was bass-ackwards; back to fire and forward to 'safe'. I also milled the receiver, to resemble Browning's A Bolt rifles, and drilled & tapped the top flat for scope mounts.

That little rifle would flat shoot.

I was looking at buying new .22lr either CZ or Savage. I wanted iron sights because I wanted to go back to basics. Once I saw the Marlin, I was 99% sure I was going to buy it. I was worried at first that it would have problems because of the price or that it would have accuracy issues. Well with the first 100 rounds, I'm impress and I'm gonna try to shoot this as accurate as I can until I can compete at the local gun club with the silhouette shoot.

Thanks.:)

The trigger can be improved by replacing the return spring with a lighter spring. Check RimFire Central.com and cruise the Marlin sections....
I have several 25's and they all do one hole groups at 25 once you find the ammo that the gun prefers....

Are you using a scope when you shoot? I'd love to be able to shoot one hole shot groups. :)

The trigger seems fairly good to me when shooting. It did not feel stiff as I thought it would. thanks for the info about rimfire central. I will stop by there sometime.

Great rifles, I got mine in the late 70's and it was my first .22 rifle. Pretty good shooting rifle and I could hit squirrels with ease back when I was into bushy tail hunting.

At my age I couldn't shoot myself in the foot without a scope!!!! The trigger will probably feel "okay" until you change the return spring and then you'll wish you had done it sooner...... Try as many different brands and types of ammo as possible, it will let you know when it finds what it likes....Good luck with the new gun...

I've got a Model 25. I paid $60 fro it at a local pawn shop. I've been shooting it fro around a year and really like it. I just put a Simmons 4-9 scope, and a barrel clamp Bi-pod on it. It's really quite accurate. I have 2 other Marlin rifles so I pretty much knew what to expect. It easily places 1" groups at 50 yds and 1.5" at 100 yds as long as I do my part. This model 25 isn't very fussy about what ammo I put in it for plinking. CCI's and Eley are the most accurate. So far I haven't found any ammo that won't feed thru this one. My wife has a Model 795 (I'm pretty sure it's a 795) and we use her 10 round mags in my model 25.
I've shot it a couple times without hearing protection and my air rifle makes more noise then this one does. The closed bolt really quiets things down over the semi0auto models.
I think you'll be quite happy with yours too.

Really good price! And good looking. I now have two (except they are the Glennfield version, same baisic one). My newest one is an 82 model with a flat surface where the serial number is stamped, and the detented safety lever. The older one is a 73 model. They both shoot well. I had to rework the firing pin on the newer one, as it was mushroomed out and wouldnt return all the way into the bolt, and replace the ejector, as it was missing. I would buy another if I found one. I like them because they are one of the very few .22 rifles that shoot the s,l,lr from the magazine. My Remington speedmaster 552 does this also, except it is tube fed and wont cycle the lower power shorts, that's why a bolt action is desirable if you want to shoot these type of low power rounds. Have fun. Thanks! TB

Nice rifle, great deal!!

I picked up my 25MN (.22WMR) for $80 a few years ago...Marlin does make a nice rifle :D

Marlin 25N 1984-1988
Yours, being a .22 S/L/LR with the Top Hat action endo, is hopefully a 25N with straight mags,
which are interchangeable with 70-P/795/995/etc 10-rd & 25-rd mags.

Some have the curvy mag and a conical action endo, it'll switch mags with older marlins like the 80.
Nothing over 7 rounds, there.

If you decide to put a better stock on it, its a fast tradeout on Boyd's 800 & 900 series Marlin stocks.
You MAY need longer stock/action screws with a Boyd's...but that's the only hiccup :)

Hey Gearchecker, can you tell me more about using a 795 magazine in you 25? It snapped right in with no modifications? If so, I wonder if it would still load the shorts like the 25 mags do. Have been wondering about a larger capacity than the 7 rounder magazine in my 25's. Can anyone else confirm this? Or know of an after market mag for the 25's that hold more than 7 rounds? Thanks, TB

That would be nice to have more than 7 rds. :)

I'd like to know as well.

I did alittle digging, looks likre the 795 mag will work in the 25N model. The 25N is the newer version of the 25 (at least I think it is). Still looking for confirmation that it will work on the straight up 25. TB

If yer mag looks like this, the 795 mag will work in a 25N (and other 25/900 series rifles as well).

If your mag looks like this Marlin 25/Marlin 80 mag...nothing else works.
