Marlin Model 1895GS .45-70 Magazine Spring

Folks,
Yesterday, I replaced the factory magazine spring in my Marlin Model 1895GS (stainless steel), .45-70 lever action rifle with a Wolff magazine spring which is marketed as being 20% stronger than the factory version. Now, the Wolff spring was literally twice as long as the factory spring. I was able to get the spring into the tubular magazine, and it is, in fact, much stronger than the factory spring. However, I can now only get three rounds into the magazine vice the four with the factory spring. Is this normal? Was I supposed to cut (shorten) the Wolff spring some? Essentially, it appears that I cannot have it both ways--a stronger spring and four rounds in the magazine.

I'm a hobby gunsmith, but I am relatively new at this. Just as background, I have replaced the factory ejector with a Wild West guns stainless steel, one-piece "bear-proof" ejector; replaced the triger and sear with a EDM trigger and sear; replaced the magazine follower with an aluminum Wild West guns follower; added Brockman rear peepsight and Brockman front "winged" sight; added a Kirkpatrick leather cartridge holder and a Pacmeyer leather slip-on recoil pad.

I like everything about the rifle, but I thought the factory magazine spring was a little "flimsy." I would appreciate any observations/suggestions on whether to leave the Wolff spring in the magazine at its current length or to shorten it some.

Got your email today:

The longer spring "will" take up space as you have noticed. They don't tell you that when you buy it. "If it is bigger than what was, the smaller the space that is" Little humor there.

You didn't mention "Why" you put in the stronger spring: Was there a problem or was this just an idea to make the thing work better. Opinion: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The spring issued is what was tested and recommended by the Mfg. Sometimes "Bells and Whistles" only make noise.

Harley,
Thanks for responding. No, it wasn't broken. I replaced it for more of a learning experience than anything. I'm going to try shooting with the new spring to see if there is any difference. Doubt if there will be, but I just find tinkering with these things is kinda interesting. Dave

Just askin

Have you tried the "new" soft pointed 45-70 slugs in your model 95 yet? Just curious if they are all the add say they are

Gary,
Great question. I think you're referring to the new Hornady bullets with the flexible tips. I have seen them advertised too, but I have not tried any of them yet. I also have a Marlin Model 336SS (Stainless steel) .30-.30 rifle, and I can't wait to try the new bullets in both rifles. If they work like their advertised, this should greatly improve the performance of the rifles. Once I try them, I'll do a "range report" on the "Art of the Rifle" portion of the forum.

soft points

exactly what I was referring to. If I can find some locally i will do a comparison with thestandard 405 round. I cannot believe it has taken this long for them to come up with this round.
