Marlin Guide Gun

Does anyone have a marlin guide gun(45-70), I wanted to know if it would be a good rifle for deer and possibly an elk, I hunt it Michigan.

MSP; I'll jump in here but I'm certainly no expert. I went deer hunting once with my brother-in-law and that's my resume'. However, I did own a Marlin 1895 years ago and I even had the barrel cut down to 181/2 inches. I was a visionary and didn't even know it! From what I've read it's a real sweet piece. Nothing but good write-ups. Some will put low power scopes on their's and some will mount a receiver sight. I had a receiver sight on mine and it worked fine out to 100 yards. Ammo choices are better nowadays than when I had mine. 45/70 ammo is expensive too. All in all a very nice compact rifle used within it's limits (a 150 yards or so). FWIW, there is a Limited run of Guide Guns in 35 remington. I'm thinkin' of getting one. 35 Rem might be a little light for Elk however. Best Regards, J. Parker

A good hunter gets close to his game. I hope you are a good hunter and keep your ranges reasonable for the caliber. Within its effective range, this cartridge will do the job.

I had a Marlin 1895 ~4 yrs. ago, I loved it (ran short of cash and had to sell it). very good at 100 yds. I used it as a brush gun and took a bambi. I'm considering one of the guide guns myself

I was able to try a 45/70 Guide Gun for a couple of shots at close range. It would be a great choice if you keep the range down. I was expecting high recoil. It didn't happen. The factory ammo I fired was probably quite mild. I've wanted one ever since, but not bad enough to actually buy it.

Factory ammo or an equivalent handload is plenty for deer in my experience. A Speer 400 bullet with any of the better "Level 2" loads in the manuals should do OK for elk within 100 yards or so.

i own a 444P (1895 in 444 marlin) and a 1895M (1895 in 450 marlin). both are great guns in tight brush. my 444 is 22" BBL w/ a ATN 5X IR scope. i have yet to do anything to the 450 as far a sights. i'm thinking of something along the lines of a ghost ring set up.
