MSP; I'll jump in here but I'm certainly no expert. I went deer hunting once with my brother-in-law and that's my resume'. However, I did own a Marlin 1895 years ago and I even had the barrel cut down to 181/2 inches. I was a visionary and didn't even know it! From what I've read it's a real sweet piece. Nothing but good write-ups. Some will put low power scopes on their's and some will mount a receiver sight. I had a receiver sight on mine and it worked fine out to 100 yards. Ammo choices are better nowadays than when I had mine. 45/70 ammo is expensive too. All in all a very nice compact rifle used within it's limits (a 150 yards or so). FWIW, there is a Limited run of Guide Guns in 35 remington. I'm thinkin' of getting one. 35 Rem might be a little light for Elk however. Best Regards, J. Parker
