Marlin Glenfield Model 30s

I have a Marlin Glenfield 30GT rifle from 1980. On the barrel it says 30GT! Its a 30-30- so as late as 1980 30 cal was used to indicate 30-30 on several rifles!

In this instance, the 30 is the model#, not the caliber. Glenfield/Marlin also chambered the model 30 in 35 Rem.

You may be technically correct, but no 30GT rifles were ever made in any caliber but 30-30! The 30GT meant 30-30 caliber.
 
Savage Model 1899 in Savage 30

It was not unusual in the 70s and 80s for manufactures to make "antique" looking rifles.( antique Winchester Model 94 made in 1975 or 76) Some of the model numbers also reflected some of this "throwback". I wonder of my Marlin Glenfield 30GT reflected this thinking. It was only made in 1979 and 1980.
 
OK, I've split this out of the Savage 99 thread as we were starting to go pretty far afield, and I think this conversation is getting interesting enough that it deserves its own thread.

The Marlin Glenfield 30GT was only made in 30-30 caliber. Yes the GT stands for Glenfield Texan. Put the 30 and GT together and you ONLY have a 30-30! The rifle has an 18 1/2 inch barrel, full length tube and straight stock. Only 7,737 were ever made in 1979 and 1980.

Right you are. But that doesn't mean that the #30 in the name comes from the first half of the cartridge named 30-30. Especially when you consider that there were Model 30's chambered in 35 Remington. The Glenfield versions of the 336 came in four models. The 36G, the 30, the 30A, and the 30GT.

By your logic, it should be called a Glenfield 35? But its still just a 30. But not a 30-30.
 
Hi Abel! You are 100% correct. I stand corrected! Neverthless, my main point is: I am positive also that by all I have read, the Marlin Glenfield 30GT was only made in 30-30 caliber. So If you or anyone spots a Marlin Glenfield 30GT in any other caliber than 30-30, its had a barrel change other than from the factory. The 30GT means it is a Glenfield Texan in 30-30 caliber! I hope I got all the correct words in the right order so as to not cause the word pickers to fret!:D
