My Father Gave me a 69 Marlin 99 M1 style 22. a few years back and i got around to fixing it up, a good cleaning and all that, but it needed very little i dont think he shot it ever. But i do think he left it cocked for 30 years so the spring is streched a bit. I took it to the range today and Shot it with mixed results. Very Good little gun , But it miss fired almost every 3rd shot. I was shooting CCI Mini Mag22 LR HP. Problably could have shot some better ammo. and also I can say it needs a new spring. But what is the Best ammo for this little guy i plan to let my wife shoot it when i take her to the range.

CCI Mini Mag is in my opinion, the best .22LR ammo. Just try breaking it in, with about 200 rounds or maybe a little more.

Yeah make sense. I put 120 or so through it ,I was reading some other forums and guys were having some of the same issues. But they were shooting sub sonic rounds or something. It did great long range shooting i was hitting great at 100 yards. the spring will put me back a whooping 4.75$ i know BIG money. cant wait to see how it does next week. Thanks for the feedback.

Guns sometimes prefer one kind of ammo over another, even by the same manufacturer. I had a Beretta 21A that hated CCI Stingers but did very well with another type of high velocity CC1 .22 (no longer made).

A Winchester 52 I have will shoot almost anything well as long as it has a 40 grain bullet. With 36 grain high vel stuff and accuracy falls off.

You might go buy a few boxes of different types of .22 ammo and see if one gives less functioning problems and better accuracy. If so, buy a whole bunch of that kind of ammo.

If you are having that many misfires with CCI it sounds like the internals can use a good cleaning. Take the stock off, remove the bolt and clean the slot the firing pin rides in. These can look clean but after years of just sitting the old oil will make a sticky type substance that can cause the pin not to move freely. Also clean the fire control mechanism and oil everything before putting it back together. Use ONE drop of oil for the bolt and receiver. The most common mistake with this action is to much oil.

Thanks Mals , Im going to strip it down and check it out tommorow. my local Gunshop guy ordered me some new springs so that should be the ticket. Im also going to try some different rounds this weekend. Has anyone put a Bipod on one of these? the swivel Mount is inset on a ring off the main stock . Im not trying to spend a ton on this Marlin but after last weekend id like to add one.

Update on ammo for the 22.Marlin 99. Well it seems it like 20 year old Federal 22lr rounds are my Answer go figure . i put them in just to see if they would fire and they did, matter of fact without one jam. my luck! but i ordered a bunch of different ammo today so it should be coming with my Bipod. i got more into this Marlin then the gun is worth but hey its a Family hand me down so might as well get the most of it. But i have noticed it fired twice as good as last week i guess the Putting 250 plus shots through it got it back on check. plus a good cleaning and dabs of oil helped.thanks friends!

You'd be surprised how much a good 99M1 is worth with the OEM Rear Sight...

That being said, it's basically a short-mag-tube Marlin 60 with the old style feed throat.
Polish the feed throat & bolt & rails the bolt rides on.
Field-Strip after every range visit for best results.

J&P Springs has a GREAT spring kit that will rejuvenate your Marlin (get the Marlin 60 kit)

Get a new Buffer from Marlin or Numrich or Midway USA or wherever as well...

Use some Howard's Feed & Wax on the stock to rejuvenate it without messing up its original finish.

DO NOT throw away the stock's top cover...for any reason. (well. ok, termites would be the exception there...)

www.RimfireCentral.com is my second home...they have the BEST Marlin-specific repair section on the internet :)

Thanks Big Shrek. I field stripped it and gave it a good cleaning. fires great ordered new springs still waiting. Went to the range today and it fired great. Had a couple FTF's but not like before. I did restain the stock but i hit perfect on the color there wasnt much choice it was in horrible condition. Somebody decided to spray Primer by it years ago and there was over spray on it. Now the next Part is going to Make the Marlin Camp kinda Mad. Since Im never going to sell it i added a small Picatinny Rail underneath and a Bipod. But let me tell you i hit Bulleyes all day today at 50yds had a blast. But if it makes The Marlin Guru's happy i do have The Original Sling for it. lol
