Marlin 982 Light Firing Pin Strikes

I have a Marlin 982s in 22 WMR. It is my goto "noise and neighbor friendly" groundhog/ small varmint rifle. I've zapped more whistle pigs with this thing without my neighbors knowing than one would believe!

Recently it's been misfiring due to light primer strikes. ******* me off. Now before I go ordering new parts or filing/ stoning etc… I was wondering if anyone has had same issue? And how they went about correcting it.

Thanks in advance.

A few questions. Does it misfire with more than one brand of ammo? Does it misfire every round? What fraction of rounds? Has this appeared during the cold of the nasty winter we have been having?

First action for me would be to disassemble the bolt, make sure all parts are squeaky clean and lubricated with light oil.

To borrow from Claude Rains in the movie, Casablanca, the "usual suspects" are the striker spring, the firing pin, or the ammunition. Assuming you've eliminated the ammo, I would start by replacing the striker spring. I had a remington 512 which did the same thing. Replacing the bolt main spring fixed it. Or you could cover all bases and replace both the striker spring and the firing pin. I don't think the parts are that expensive.

I have a marlin 782, which is different but still similar. Your bolt should be a pinned together, two piece bolt. The striker spring and striker are in the back half, and of, course the firing pin is in the front half. The striker is held in place by a screw in the bolt, but you may have to dis-assemble the front bolt piece to get to the firing pin. Good luck with your problem. I really like my 782. The 780, 880, and 980 marlin series are good rifles.

Disassemble the bolt and look for obvious issues. (If you don't know how, there are disassembly videos on YouTube. The steps are the same for any of the 780/880/980 series rifles, unless you get into the trigger group.)
Easily identifiable problems include: broken firing pin, debris/crud in firing pin channel, deformed firing pin, deformed striker, and more...

If there's nothing obvious, try replacing the striker spring.
...and don't store the rifle with the striker cocked. ;)
