Marlin 81 barrel removal

Any tips on how to get the barrel out of the receiver? I managed to remove the pin. The barrel refused to come out. Do I need to press it out? I don't have access to a press. Is it possible to pound it out with a aluminum rod through the receiver? How do I put the barrel back on? I just need to replace the broken cartridge guide spring. Thanks.

The barrel and receiver are splined. Take a center punch and make index marks on bottom of barrel and receiver. The barrel can then be removed, a press is preferred, driving out is really not that hard. GW

Thanks for the info. Here is my treatment plan.

1. Make a aluminum disk to protect the breech and muzzle. Find the thickest steel rod that fits in the receiver.

2. Make horse shape collar for the receiver to rest on. Put Al disk against the breech followed by steel rod. Proceed to pound out the barrel.

3. For reinstallation, clamp receiver in vise between wooden v blocks, insert barrel with new cartridge guide. Put Al disk on muzzle and tap it home with hammer.

Of course first I will make index mark as you have suggested.
