Marlin 60 vs. Ruger 10/22 Actual testing

After the last thread comparing the two I decided to do some testing.

I was under the assumption that my Marlin would outshoot my stock 10/22. I was wrong.

Full details of my tests including target pics can be found at my blog here.

Basically I benched both my Marlin 60 and my Ruger 10/22. I compared four ammo types and even used the exact same scope swapped between rifles. The Ruger won across the board.

I couldn't believe it either. I'm so baffled I'm demanding a rematch in the near future. :)

Yeah. That stinks. I spent the last hour and a half writing the article and uploading the photos. Then I link it and it dies. I've emailed my hosting support. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

In the mean time a brief summary:

Stock Marlin Glenfield Model 60, Stock 10/22 Carbine (with 1" buttstock extension)

Four five shot groups at 50 yds from sandbags using:
Ammo / Marlin 60 / Ruger 10/22
Federal Bulk pack HP/ 3.395" / 2.021"
Federal Automatch/ 3.237" / 2.238"
Remington Thunderbolt/ 2.916"/ 1.634"
Aquila 38gr HP/ 2.908"/ 1.341"

Color me surprised.

Maybe something is not quite right with your marlin. Mine shoots 1/2 to 3/4" at 50 yds with several types of ammo. Maybe needs cleaning, stock screws not tight?

Cool. Site is back up so target pics are available.

@dbldblu

Yes I considered the cleaning. I haven't detail stripped it lately but it also hasn't been shot much. I plan to strip and clean it and then retest.

Try some standard velocity or even the less expensive match graded ammo. Sometimes in some guns the hivel ammo just spreads out groups more. It is a pain in the rear if you do get a gun that is really ammo picky. Nice to have one that works good groups with several kinds. I have had Marlins that were OK. I got a Ruger now and it shoots fine so I can't see going ape with hundreds of dollars of Kustom Ruger Mods to reduce a 50 yard group from half to a quarter inch for general usage.

More testing required. I have a Marlin Model 60 and out shoot my son and friends of both of us who have 10/22's. At 50 yards with a scope, I can lay them on top of each other. At 100 yards, no wind, I can cover my groups with a quarter.............Go figure?...........;)

My M60 shoots better than that also, but this newer one is NOT as accurate as the older Small Game Edition that I used to have. Mine shoots the WW silver box 50 count Power Points into an even inch at 50 yards with a Tasco 4 power. Federal bulk box shoots 1 1/2 inches and RP bulk box a tad bigger. Maybe the Marlin needs a good cleaning and tightening to do better. In all fairness my brother's stock 10/22 is just about as accurate as your results indicate. Enjoy. CB

I never got around to testing the accuracy of my Marlin 60. It jammed so bad I couldn't get more than 5 shots at a time out of it.

My 60 can shoot more accuratly off a bench than the 10/22 I had but the Marlins crappy trigger makes you work for it.
I heard some .22's get more accurate once the barrles get leaded up a bit.
Mine shoots just about anything CCI very accuratly , especially the green tag's

If you can only get 5 shots out of a 60, you either have maintenance or ammo problems. IMHO. They are cheap but not junk. I can get a Ruger to jam with certain types of ammo, but not many.

I got both and even though I have done more to accurize the 10/22 the Marlin has been nothing but reliable to me and as for accuracy it is still capable of hitting what I am wanting to shoot with in a reasonable range of course

My 30 year old marlin 60 has helped me outshoot my dad with his new bull-barreled 10/22.

We both have our ammo preferences... he likes minimags and I like stingers.

Interesting results. I guess all rifles are individuals.

I own both a 10/22 and a Model 60, and MY Model 60 (which is 30 years old) outshoots MY 10/22, which is about 10 years old. I have tried Peters .22, Golden Bullets, Thunderbolts, and Federal. Go figger.

Oddly enough, my Romanian Model 1969 is just a hair more accurate than the Model 60. Again, with several types of ammo.
